(I never stole a stapler because one time in undergrad my now-husband and our housemates found a full box of staplers on the curb and we gave them out as party favours to anyone who came over AND THAT IS HOW YOU TELL A CONFESSIONAL STORY ON THE INTERNET)

This podcast is also so invested in letting Mack off the hook for being an abusive monster and its aggressive tone in that regard is making me just hate every single person involved.

In general I agree that seeing people who get into cults as stupid is wrong and misses the point of how cults function BUT this particular cult was so, so desperately stupid and full of deeply stupid people.

My favourite part is “they’ll want to COLLECT ALL THE BOOKS.” Harlequin called, they said you’re late to their party.

I just noticed I haven't published anything since 2022 which is also when they gave me tenure, probably not the energy they were hoping I would bring to this party.

Me too. It's wild they dragged it out so long.

Also, I feel like I had so much absolutely crazed, manic energy to do cool shit during the closure period of the pandemic and then when it just became, like, the ongoing crushing reality of life I stopped having any energy at all.

Oh my god, I was just rewatching and I had totally forgotten we screened @savasavasava.myatproto.social's BLAXITES!!! What a great day that was. Just a corner of the internet with the people I trust most to talk about surveillance and student care. It was all such a blur at the time.

It's so good because he ended up embroiled in a pretendian scandal a few years later and this whole passage has big "when people show you who they are, believe them" vibes.

Some of the smartest people I know on the internet, from @mahabali.bsky.social and @hypervisible.blacksky.app to Cory Doctorow and Audrey Watters, showed up to defend the critical right of educators to speak against the corporate powers that increasingly hold the balance of power in our schools.

In fact, supporting @linkletter.org prompted some of the best work of my career so far, namely the Against Surveillance event we held to raise money and awareness about the case (you can still watch the video at againstsurveillance.net).
