My body is ready to cry at a movie probably only ostensibly about the history of concrete but most likely about a lot of other things that are connected in extremely unlikely ways but when you see how they are connected it opens your mind in a very exciting way festival.sundance.org/program/film...

Waffles the cream standard poodle being a punk in the yard, bouncing around like a derp lord, wearing a giant red bow, all dressed up for the family hoiday photo. Concerned teens walk away from the freakishly happy dog. Same poodle, same kid, later on that week, waffles receiving skritches on the couch and the dang dog is leaning back in total and complete happiness.

Celebrating the second holiest day in this house: Turkey Noodle Soup Day!

(The dutch oven was a wedding gift to my parents in 1968. About a month after they got it, the original handle fell off. My dad took it to a dude down the road who welded on a new handle!)
In an orange-enameled dutch oven, a glowing orange-yellow turkey noodle soup with bits of white egg noodle, chunks of carrot and celery, sits, warming. The inside of an orange-enameled dutch oven lid is stamped or cast with an "FE" and the word "Belgium". There are two blackened and bubbled spots where the new handle was welded on the top side of the lid. A orange-enameled dutch oven with its obviously not OEM steel rod lid handle welded onto the cast iron.

Saved by Stoppard Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec 1), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy", and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival. Celebrating the holiest day we have in this house: Turkey Stock Day!
A big ‘ol aluminum stock pan filled with a turkey carcass (not pictured because ew) a bunch of savory vegetables and herbs and what not and previous stocks and water. The stovetop is black. There’s a black kettle. A square porcelain plate with dark green glaze around the edge is hung above the stove because while beautiful, it cracked in half one day. Fridge is decorated with a hodgepodge of family and political ephemera.

Nearly every time I look up what these Seward addresses look like today, it's all, whoa, they really did decide to rezone a bunch of blocks in Seward. Stardust Lanes, you can stay. Get bent, everyone else.

If you're into ceramics/pottery, be sure to check out Mark Pharis's aesthetic arc. Started out as a straight ahead MacKenzie-ian studio potter, then slowly morphed into a handbuilding color wizard. If we in The States had cool awards like Japan's "Living National Treasure", he'd be one!
A ceramic vase, pieced together from three geometric shapes: the foot, a belly, and a open-coned head. At the neck, on each side, two half moon "handles". The pot is mostly white, with wedges of black on the points of the belly and dark green sort of folding down from the mouth of the vase.

In this week's New Yorker, an absolute banger by DA Powell: "Senescence"
Senescence By D. A. Powell Just as I come to know a thing it's gone again. What's in my heartwood in my head, brashy, ashy, friable, crumbled colors. Dormancy. Of matter, of leaf, an orderly degradation. I have come to measure the dark, not just the frost and not the lack of light. The uninterrupted dark of which the winter is a small part. A contraction of the corona, catch in the windpipe of the old organ, organ of the old windpipe, pipe of the pileated woodpecker pecking a whole hole in me. Yellow, orange, brown. The greens break down, the chloroplasts depart. Each leaf losing its factories from the outside in, its faculties I seem to mean, from edge to artery, the last gold somewhere in a vein of no use now. Abscission is a nice way to say the natural cutting off of things. A wounded limb where leaf scar gives way to bud scale, safeguard, night nurse, attending orderly of the tender leaf below. It comes again the assent of spring first leaf first bloom first fiddle of the fiddle fern. I hated to lose the light, right when the frost and the xanthophyll make shatter lightning so plentiful wind shaking the old boughs tambor style I do not gentle into any any. Any one leaves and another moves in. New twigs. New nest. Sometimes a whole new tree in another life in another fall from another book in another tongue and what world, this one? This one? This one, maybe. Maybe the last page torn off so it can't be read so it cannot happen (have happened) yet

It has been a long, long week so here is a very short video: My grandmother, behind the camera, shooting a moment from my mother's 4th or 5th birthday. That is, until my grandfather strolls into frame, pounding a beer, and she absolutely looses track of the primary narrative.

What perfect album came out the year you turned 16?

A pretty stacked year! Lifes Rich Pageant, obviously. But, if we're defining "perfect" as "most re-wired your brain about what a song could be and what a band could be", this is the perfect one.

Things were LIT from a friend’s house in Mound!
