Unfortunately it’s not just Trumpers. On Twitter there are numerous posts/threads with tens of thousands of likes from self-identified American leftists and liberals talking about how Canada is just as evil as the US gaslighting Canadians for having the audacity to not be happy with us right now.

It’s certainly important to understand our histories but the frequency with which people keep doing it in this situation is a bit exhausting. It certainly doesn’t offer any prescriptions on how Canada can defend themselves from my government.

Feels like I am having the same conversations with Russian academics, activists, family and friends in the early 2010s all over again.

To clarify I meant they *are* willing to go along with it. Trump won the popular vote! You can talk about the difference of their electoral system all you like but people voted for him again after everything. Ukrainians chose to go a different path than Russia and are willing to really fight for it.

This is not “only because of Trump.” There are tens of millions of people who are not willing to go along with whatever fascist policy the admin decides on but actively participate it because our culture is sick and this feigned helplessness isn’t helping anyone.

We are talking about the present not the past. So what if they also have a dark history? If MAGA occupied Alberta and Canadians were chanting “death to the occupiers” would you reply with “no such thing as occupation on stolen land?”

Does Canada have a federal agency in masks brutalizing people and putting them in concentration camps? Are they trying to manufacture a secessionist movement in order to occupy their neighbor? Are they trying to invade their allies? Be serious.

People have fantasies about being in the French resistance, and even if they were, which they aren’t, the online opsec stuff they’re talking about is like 1/5 of what they would actually need to do to protect themselves.

Do not get on the anticipatory moral disengagement train. to it’s exactly what many left & liberal Russians did after the invasion of Georgia, Ukraine, Syria. Russian leftists and liberals talked like this too and kept going at all their neighbors online. “You think you’re so different?!”

Wish I could say the same. One of my old neighbors in the local import/export business built his own drones and would do little surveillance flights at night spying on one that popped up in the neighborhood. We took predictions how long it would take the cops to figure it out. Was handled privately.
