For Pride I thought I might occasionally recommend books by LGBT poets. Today I’d like to spotlight Stephanie Burt’s “We Are Mermaids.” Burt’s a trans poet who frequently writes about adolescence as an awkward time of dreams & experimentation before adulthood locks you into preprepared scripts.

In Seattle, the start of spring brings sorrel, an herb with a strong, lemony tang. It makes a delicious soup with just onion, garlic, olive oil, and potato. I used red-veined sorrel but any kind works.

Sofia Gubaidulina (1931-2025) was a composer who sought God through fearless art. Her “Seven Words” is a masterpiece, a meditation on the Crucifixion that dwells on the senselessness of pain and death. She is not an easy listen: she aims for truth. I fiercely admire her. youtu.be/PltmF20Hr1U?...

Quark premiered on NBC in May, 1977, less than 3 weeks before the release of Star Wars. It featured a crew working on an intergalactic garbage scowl, and it heavily parodied Star Trek. Only 8 episodes were made.
