It’s called the “National Petroleum Reserve” for a reason. That area is not a “pristine wilderness” - it’s an endless swamp, frozen for much of the year. No one wants to drill there, so it won’t be developed, but Alaskans don’t want people from the Lower 48 to tell us how to manage our land.

I'm mad about the shut down and worried about healthcare, but not letting people starve is a pretty good reason to cave on this bureaucratic fight, the more I think about it. So just say that: Republicans wanted you to starve rather than compromise, so we let this one go.
