There was an eagerness to explain away the Devil as a fallen angel, as if that will solve our problems with them/him/it

I've been teaching a class on liturgical seasons and when the topic of the Devil came up I was inspired by Ziegler to say it's not helpful for Christian life to speculate where the Devil came from; the Christian's task rather is to know what the Devil does, and resist!

I found this claim astonishing (in a good way). IIRC he just thinks Job's Satan is a red herring and writes it off. But at some point, a more developed study needs to include it...

“…the devil constitutes an intimate enemy, one at home in the very sources of faith. Piety is as such not protection from the devil so much as it is the devil’s playground.”

Just a musing, but last time I checked Coakley is sensitive to modern criticisms of Christian anthropology around gender and sex, but addresses them in a "dogmatic" fashion by integrating the concerns with patristic resources that explore the human being as a creature of desire

Theologically this could jive well with Coakley's projects

I'm glad there's biblical evidence for my reticence to go full-blast supralapsarian/"Incarnation regardless of fall"

I attended the lectures that birthed this book last year. It was very cool.

It feels nice to be finishing Matt 25 today in time for Advent.

My Sermon on the Mount notebook has turned into a “all five of Jesus’ teaching passages in Matthew” notebook. Six translations of the Sermon, then one version of Matt 10, 13, 18, and 24–25 in sequence.
