Career highlight today. Finally got to hear Jenny Malloy aka Hackney child speak. Followed her for many years, read all her books & always found her so inspiring. Honoured to hear her story first hand today. Deeply moving & powerful. Her books are a must-read for fellow social workers.

So sad. His contribution to protecting the rights of children was exceptional. Such a positively influential man of deep humanity who leaves a lasting legacy.

The report is genuinely shocking. Rigid, out dated and frankly harmful ‘discipline’. Never ok, but in the context of the current youth mental health crisis, even more shocking. High results do not justify practices such as this, or come before safeguarding.
@bphillipsonmp.bsky.social needs to join the dots on this one. We have the most significant, deepening youth mental health crisis since records began. Of course children need sensible rules and guidance. But that shouldn’t involve shouting at them and humiliating them.
Safeguarding review on ‘zero tolerance’ sparks national row
Hackney safeguarding chair will write to the education secretary to voice concerns over criticism of the review from DfE behaviour ambassador Tom Bennett

The data makes it clear: current policy is failing vulnerable young people. Urgent reform is needed to ensure every child receives the care they deserve. #KeepCaringTo18

Exactly. We need long-term, preventative support, not just crisis responses.
This is an important set of questions and the lack of services show the problems of short term thinking that plague the child protection system
‘A family justice system that removes the fourth, fifth or sixth child from families without doing anything about the reasons for removal is a failing system.’

Agreed; addressing VAWG needs to start with facing the facts, not the headlines.
I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.

The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.

Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

Absolutely this. Children’s behaviour is communication — especially when they’ve been hurt. We must understand the pain behind the actions to help them heal.
When a child has experienced trauma, their behaviour isn’t a moral failing, it’s communication. The anger you see? That’s pain. The defiance? That’s fear. And the silence? That’s a survival strategy. None of this is about excusing bad behaviour. It’s about understanding it!
