Again, I actually liked the movie. This isn't like a hard criticism. It's more like, comparative religious studies is one of my areas of interest, and so I was struck by the disjoint, which in some ways is kind of more interesting than if it had landed cleanly.

I wanted to read it that way, and I figured that was part of the intent, but there were just so few Catholic signifiers that I wasn't able to buy in.

Though there is something to be said about stacking the deck. Like, would Johnson's audience accept the themes without those aesthetics? This is something that the film itself discusses, and I am now considering if that conversation about the church was actually about the film itself.
