I really think the term "populist" obscures more than it explains at this point. the left actually wants to make ordinary people's lives better, and the right wants to make them worse. "right wing populism" just means they are lying about it!
Matt Stoller: “..Trump & Mamdani defeated establishment in their own way, representing hunger of voters on the right & left who want something different. If those sides cd come together.. that would be a sea change in how we organize our political economy”.

Monopoly Round-Up: Why the Establishment Freaked Out Over a Mamdani-Trump Press Conference
Meta wins its antitrust case, there are now two fire truck antitrust claims, the stock market got wobbly, and Larry Summers was exiled from the establishment, at least for now.

a big part of my politics these days is "when people are clearly lying about what they're doing and why, don't pretend they are not!"
The purpose of DOGE was not actually cutting federal spending or improving government efficiency, so it was not really a failure.

Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

It's baffling to see @governor.ny.gov work overtime to trash our climate law, poison our water and air, and raise our utility rates to line the pockets of fossil fuel barons--until you see how much money is flying around between big polluters, big lobbyists, and Hochul's campaign

No one man should have all that power.
This is what Elon Musk's trillion dollar payout looks like when annualized and compared to the total annual income of every EMT, school bus driver, nurse, teacher, cashier, and even CEOs.

This is class war. And the oligarchs are winning. The time to organize is now.

Interesting to see how many people on Bluesky have interpreted Mamdani's participation in an NYC DSA forum last night as intervention against the wishes of membership meanwhile the consensus among membership seems to be pretty energetic and joyful that he is actively participating.

New — I wrote about the myriad ways journalism’s moral rot manifests, and how our crumbling institutions have created the conditions for it to fester:
Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Esptein's journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.

Good. Seems pretty obvious: the pipeline did not become less harmful to the environment than the previous times it was rejected!
⚠️ Breaking: Enviro groups sue NY and NJ over NESE pipeline approvals, in three parallel suits before the US Court of Appeals, Second Circuit.

They cite regulators’ previous, repeated decisions rejecting the pipeline.

wondering if the flipside of this trend is that the elite capitulation to Trump is in part because they are still reading the Times & Co's proclamations that Trump's 1% win is a sweeping mandate to transform the country in his image for eternity
My latest premium newsletter is about the failure of the anti-Mamdani media blitz, and what it says about the decaying influence of The New York Times.

Those claiming Dems should retreat on racial justice aren't hard-headed realists, they're pushing against the electoral tide rather than leaning into it. The story of Gen Z isn't about racist backlash or red-pilled young men. It's the most racially progressive generation in American history. 🧵

While successful politicians fight for affordability, Hochul’s anti-climate crusade will only drive New Yorkers’ utility bills up. Whether this betrayal is due to personal corruption or orders from Trump, it’s not too late to lead by building public renewables.

it seems like some consultants have convinced them that attacking renewable energy makes voters think you're lowering their bills, and then couple that with the fossil fuel industry and associate interests and you get these incoherent policies that are bad for the climate AND bills AND jobs
I'm kind of baffled how the "moderates" have apparently all decided to turn against climate policy at once, just as China reaches green electrostate liftoff mode. I thought these people were all about National Greatness and making Hard Choices

Kathy Hochul could bring down bills and protect our future by building 15 gigawatts of public renewables.

Instead, she's raising bills to build Trump's fracked gas pipeline and a crypto mine.

Is this why?

it's hard to overstate how terrible Kathy Hochul's climate and energy policy is both scientifically and politically: she's violating our own laws to wreck our climate AND jacking up everyone's bills to do it. makes no sense unless there's personal corruption involved

Let's make this a reality in Jersey City by electing Joel Brooks and Jake Ephros!

We've got just 3 weeks until their runoff on Dec. 2nd. Send them to office with a donation today ⬇️
That’s why I’m excited to announce that I’ll be bringing forward a proposal to formally establish a Democratic Socialist Caucus within the City Council — and I will be running to lead it.
