Part of it is the need to have Jayce step in and save his waif from a big man, but I think the drama and pettiness of Jayce trying to out-compete a similarly busty woman for Viktor's attention is more fun and being unfairly left to rot on the table

like early on, after waking up, they meet a local and are told about some bastion of civilization like a continent away where most of the displaced populace live. So the story is the travelogue of them getting there, the places they see, people they meet, and, of course, their personal bullshit.
