Bird and Beach

Ryan likes to make art inspired by coastal landscapes. Elisabeth likes to draw birds. If you like birds, or beaches, maybe you should follow us in case you also like what we make. 😊
Located overlooking Te Awakairangi in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I’m also really chuffed with how beautifully the fabric shows the details.

After a long day battling InDesign and my printer, all the tea towels are neatly pressed snuggled up in their packaging, ready to send out to their new homes.

Am I allowed to be just a little bit pleased with how well they’ve come out after all that work?

While we're at it... We've only got a few of the calendars left, and the last date for ordering in time for holiday gifting is Wednesday, 10 Dec. If you thought you needed one, now's the time - the price has dropped to $25 + shipping. Get them while you can!

Thought you’d missed out on tea towels for the holidays?

Fear not! All the pre-orders have been stitched up and inspected, so the contingency spares are now available to purchase, and we raided our market stock for you too.

Limited stock, don’t miss out again!

Elisabeth has been busy in the workroom today, and all but one of the pre-orders have been stitched up.

If you’re starting to regret missing out on the pre-orders, we’ve got your back: we ordered a few extras, in case of misprints.

Once the pre-orders are all stitched, the spares will go online!

Time for the reveal!

How many tea towels did I get stitched this evening?

I wanted to do a video of me sewing the first pōhutukawa tea towel, because they’ve come out so beautifully, but it turns out that the phone holder for my tripod is one of the things still packed away (in a mystery location), and the resulting video might cause seasickness so here’s a photo instead.

Tea towel sewing o’clock update (it’s dinner time).

This is what I’ve cut out, and what’s still to cut. Not all that get cut will get sewn tonight.
December 2, 2025 at 7:12 AM
The sewing starts now… and here’s a peek at my new workroom!

Shout outs are to Finlay Building Ltd (my nephew Tim), Illuminex (electricians) and Next State Print, who do such a lovely job of bespoke printing my - I mean OUR - designs!

Actually, let’s make this interesting!

Who wants to win a tea towel? Quote post with your guess before 11 pm. Closest wins. If more than one person has the closest guess, names go in a hat.

Prize value: NZ$35
Can be sent to an address in Aotearoa or Australia (you may enter from elsewhere.)

Guess what Elisabeth is up to this afternoon?

Quick update for those waiting for tea towel preorders: the fabric is in the country! All going well I'll have them sewn up and out the door by the end of this week.

Have we told you that Elisabeth likes drawing birds?

This is the first known work in her #NZNatives series, darling from the early 80s.

Ryan likes to call Oyster Catchers “Traffic Cone birds” when he spots them at the beach.

(We’re moving into the new workroom, and found some old portfolios.)

Speaking of coasters, did e we ever show you the presentation boxes that the sets of 4 come in? We’re very into slow production here, so we designed the boxes so that we can run the printed sheets through our cutting machine, and then fold and glue the them ourselves.
November 12, 2025 at 5:21 AM
We just had a whole pile of blank coasters delivered, which means it’s sneak peek time! These are some of the new designs that we’ll be launching very soon…

Looking nor’east, they almost look like eels…

(Spotting shapes in the clouds is one of the things we both love doing, so I’m taking photos to share with him when I get home from my walk.)
November 10, 2025 at 12:36 AM
Look, I know I’m supposed to be Bird, and Ryan is Beach, but I really, really love a good colour gradient so this monotone shading in the sky over Pito One is very pleasing to my eye.

This is what you call a surprise market! We thought we’d missed out, then at 3:50 Elisabeth got a call… so tonight you’ll find her at the Trentham Night Market, at the Racecourse.
What a beautiful night for it, on until 20 pm, 70 craft stalls plus food trucks!
November 7, 2025 at 6:20 AM
To do list:

• fulfill orders
• order supplies
• have fun playing with 50 of these…

Native birds on Christmas ornaments. Please tell me this is something you want for your tree this year?
November 3, 2025 at 3:08 AM
Are you in the Wairarapa today? (You should be in the Wairarapa today.)

Why, you ask… because today is the Rathkeale Fête, with many wonderful stalls, including Bird and Beach.
October 31, 2025 at 10:42 PM
After a bit of a boo-boo with a clogged nozzle, look at what is hot off the printer tonight! Limited numbers of these new, round coasters will be heading to the Wairarapa with Elisabeth for Rathkeale Fête on Saturday.
