Anyway, this is why live drawings are so heavily recommended to folks still learning how to draw. When you do studies from flat images, there's a lot of possible distortion that the observer may not be aware of. Observations from life are being received by that universal organ, the ol' eyeball.

Proportions don't actually change, they just overlap.

This is why some reference materials can look "unnatural" - we expect things to get bigger if they come closer to us, especially when we're used to looking at images that have been captured with cameras. In reality, the size change is subtle.
