my sister got me one of those 3D bookend kits for my birthday and I finally got around to building it. it was fun! other than the lingering implication that she thinks I'm a weeb I guess
A table full of perforated wooden sheets of multicoloured parts. There is an instruction manual and a tube of glue. A small assembled part containing the front end of a train, a level crossing, and a cherry blossom tree. Several larger parts lying around, including a couple of alley walls and a small creek. The completed bookend, with small LEDs illuminating the dense scene.

seriously this is the most entertaining dungeon crawler I've played in a long time
A garbage-laden corridor with lanterns and boarded-up doors. A spindly pale demon lumbers towards the player. A combat screen with a load of status effects being applied to the layer. Two tiny purple fairies hover in an industrial room. A rough stone corridor that branches in two. A tall figure in a dark robe stands nonchalantly at the fork. Another combat screen. I'm on fire. The enemy is on fire. Everything is on fire and it's totally according to plan.

Played the Corpus Edax demo and this game is so fucking funny. It's like Invisible War if Invisible War let you hit a dude with a lead pipe so hard that he ragdolled and went flying across a room
A grungy sci-fi courtyard with a tree in a metallic planter and a giant fan set into the wall, casting shadows on the surrounding walls. Two members of the 'Skulls' gang are infighting on a subway platform. The player, who is not in immediate danger, is sitting down and resting. A dystopian city skyline, viewed from a junkyard. The sky is grey and thick with fog. A decrepit hotel lobby with a vast central staircase, lit by flaming trash cans.

Poking around in a demo disc I had as a kid and experiencing Domination (1997, Xtreme Games). It's mostly unremarkable but I do love the in-game terminal system (and the profoundly maximalist hud)
A first-person shooter in classic 2.5D. The player character is wielding double chainguns and the HUD is cluttered with various readouts (many of which are, in fact, giving useful information) An intro cinematic where a bunch of pseudomilitary orders are printed out on a green-and-black console screen. Small images of our grungy cyberpunk protagonist guy are displayed at the top. A terminal system with a prompt and various commands. A shareware screen prompting you to buy the full version. It promises "bitchin wetware", "guts flying everywhere" and "girls, girls, girls". Thanks, guys.

Global Star Software's shareware compilation discs rewrote my brain

Maddie's been on a killer baking spree for the last few weeks so we kinda technically ended up having three (!) cakes for my birthday

I'm 30 today. I spent a long time thinking I'd never reach it, and an equally long time dreading it. I felt like I wasn't done with my 20s, like I'd been forced to cram everything into a few short years.

But right now I feel fine. I think I'm just happy to be here. I have so much living left to do.
