Candles were placed inside the turnips and they were used to frighten people on the night of 31 October. The pumpkin that is prevalent today is an American development of this Irish tradition.

Sudan, with a population of 48 million, is suffering the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Since war broke out in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, about 150,000 people have been killed and 12 million driven from their homes. Most remain displaced within Sudan, while millions have fled to Chad, South Sudan and Egypt. Much of Khartoum and Darfur has been destroyed, famine and disease are spreading, and nearly half the population now depends on aid for food, water, shelter and medical care. Since 2023, Ireland has provided about €56 million in aid to Palestine and roughly €30 million only to Sudan.

Back tomorrow.
David N. Doyle’s Ireland, Irishmen and Revolutionary America explores the political and social links between Ireland and America from 1760 to 1820. It focuses on Irish migration, especially of Ulster Protestants, and how their identities and loyalties evolved in the revolutionary Atlantic world. He examines why some Irish emigrants supported American independence while others remained loyal to Britain, and connects developments in Ireland to wider movements for reform and revolution in America, France, and Britain. The book places Ireland within the broader Atlantic context, showing how ideas and people moved across borders.

Oval plaque on Granard Bridge over Royal Canal is badly weathered.Bridges along the canal were marked with the initials R.C.C. for the Royal Canal Company and the year of completion. Although most of the lettering has eroded, the faint outline and style suggest it once read “R.C.C. 1795” - not sure?
Granard Bridge is an arched stone bridge in Castleknock, Dublin, built around 1810 to carry the Castleknock Road over the Royal Canal and the adjacent Midland Great Western Railway line, which necessitated a skew crossing. Named for the Earl of Granard, a significant shareholder in the Royal Canal Company, the bridge was constructed shortly after the canal's completion and a new railway bridge was added to its south in the mid-19th century. The bridge is a historic site.
