My late mother was a costume maker. In her career she made more than 5000 costumes.

I grew up with Dracula, the Movie, the Werewolf, life-size Raggedy Ann Dolls and Cleopatra.

No wonder I do all my costumes from scratch and I love Halloween!

HALLOW'S CROSSINGEvery year, near the end of Harvest Season, when cold winds passes through your soul, the he boundary between our world and the "Otherside" falters. This is when that, for a single night, both become one. The old texts call it Hallow’s Crossing. What most celebrate now with masks and candies began as a warning. The masks were never meant to scare spirits, but to confuse them. The Otherside, the dark reflection of our world, is where everything denied, broken, or cast away hides. When the Veil weakens, reflections crawl free, and both worlds coexist all at once, in the same place, in the same time. No one agrees why it happens. Some say grief loosens the boundary, others blame the harvest moon or the dying year itself. During the last recorded Merge, entire villages had vanished at dawn. Survivors spoke of hollow men wearing familiar faces, of rivers of ashes, and blood red moon. It’s said that when dawn seals the Veil again, many are changed forever. It is believed that these people are reflections from the Otherside that took the places of those we know. In remote towns, old customs persist. Bells are rung to steady the Veil. Mirrors are draped in cloth so nothing can stare back. Doors are left barred after midnight, when Veil is at its thinnest and no knocking should be answered... Old and wise people say the safest way to survive the night is to pretend you aren’t there at all. Because when the worlds meet, no one is safe.

Promptober Day 30: Harvest

Let's go with a classical trope: a harvest festival gone wrong because of ... scarecrows ... Let's do this!

ONE-SHOT PITCH: THE LONG HARVEST Every fall, the villagers of Thornsmouth Hollow hold The Long Harvest, a festival meant to thank the land for another year of life. Effigies made from old stalks and wicker are raised in the fields, each stuffed with grain, hair, and a drop of blood from every families in the village. This year, the scarecrows walked down their posts and they intend to eradicate Thornsmouth Hollow from the map. WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING The ritual that once kept the land fertile has begun to fail. The scarecrows, called The Straw Sentinels, were never protectors, they were vessels. Their purpose was to bind the Harrowed Spirit, a god of famine and blight sealed by desperate ancestors. But the binding’s been fraying year by year, and this festival’s blood offering wasn't enough to complete the ritual. Act I — The Festival: Drunken celebration, harvest games, and superstition. Strange omens, and a scarecrow missing from its post. Act II — The Awakening: The first murder. A villager is found stuffed with hay. Lanterns vanish from the fields, one by one. Something tall walks between the rows. Act III — The Long Night: The scarecrows are on the loose. Players must uncover what went wrong and either rebind the Harrowed Spirit or join the harvest. POTENTIAL TWIST One of the PCs’ ancestors helped make the first binding, meaning their blood can end it… or complete it.

STRANGE FLORA RANDOM TABLE ROLL D10 Bleeding Daisy: Crushed petals, mixed with morning dew turn to warm blood belonging to someone nearby which soon feel faint. Forget-Me-Bloom: When smelled, it erases one memory… temporarily. Gravemouth Orchid: Grows only from fresh graves; mashed and placed into the corpse's mouth at night allows it to talk for a few minutes. Lantern Lily: Glows brighter when death approaches; wilts instantly when a soul departs. White Widow Vine: Coils tightly around living limbs, feeding off blood. Hunger Poppy: Whoever eats a petal becomes ravenously starving, no matter how much they consume, for an hour. Ashbloom Rose: Bursts into ash when touched that irritates the inhaler's lungs. Tongue-Root Flower: Grants fluency in any language while chewed, but last only a few minutes. Crown-of-Moths: When burned, the flower creates a cloud of living moths. They form a halo around a random invisible creature nearby. Hollowstem Briar: When handled, it drains the breath from lungs trapping the stolen air inside its stems, which then whistle in the wind.

Today, the theme inspired me to create a god inspired from the song "Un Mauvais Dieu" by french celtic rap group Manau.

THE HOLLOW KING Long ago a god rose whose worship centered on appetite and domination: greed, unbridled desire, and rage made into rituals. His name is many things in many tongues, but the old folk call him the Hollow King. He is visceral desire incarnated. When he rises, greed is worship, temptation is truth, and inflicting misery is the only prayer he hears. A circle of druids, The Order of the Withered Crown, buried him beneath the earth. They forged a Stone Binding, a lattice of oak roots hardened like iron and ringed with runes, anchoring his form in the dark. They broke his true name into ten carved tablets, and scattered them in catacombs across the land, so that no tongue could utter his name whole. And they wove a third shackle: Vowwork. Oaths etched in the blood of every druid present. Those promises still pulse through their descendants, and as each bloodline thins or turns away from the order, another thread of his prison loosens. His freedom is not a matter of strength, but of time. The Hollow King isn’t a god who orders people around. Instead, he makes them want things like more money, more control, more attention, until they’ll do anything to get it. His power turns greed into a goal, desire into obsession, and trust into manipulation. He spreads through small choices that feel harmless at first, and before long, these small choices ruins lives. The druids used a seal made from three layers: Stone Binding: physical, made of oak, iron, and carved council runes. Name-Tether: the god’s true name is split across ten tablets and spread in catacombs and dungeons across the land; to speak his full name is to unbind one portion. Vowwork: lines of blood sworn by order members; as the bloodlines die out or leave their vows, the binding frays. Over centuries the stone weathers, tablets are lost, vows erode. A prophecy claims that at the turning of a thousand years and one more dawn, the catacombs will open again and the Hollow King will rise again...

Camera auto-focus hunting.] Unknown Voice #1 (breathing hard): Okay, okay—red light means it’s recording, right? Unknown Voice #2 (whispering): Don’t point it at me—point it at that. [Camera swings wildly. Glimpse of trees. Fog.] Voice #2: It’s still out there. We should’ve— Voice #1: Shhh! [Deep, distant cracking sound — like antlers grinding against wood.] Voice #1 (panicked whisper): That’s it. That’s the same sound. Voice #2: It’s circling us… [Camera zooms. Something huge moves between trunks: silhouettes of horns, unmatched size.] Voice #1: Oh god. Voice #2: Don’t run. It sees movement. [Low rasping exhale — wet, wrong. Fog bursts forward like breath from a furnace.] Voice #2 (soft): Animals don’t make fog. Voice #1: It’s hollow. I saw inside it. There’s—there’s nothing in there. [Closer. Heavy steps. A fly lands on the lens.] Voice #1: Back up. Back up. Voice #2 (sobbing): It’s crowned in blood… [Antlers fill the frame — dripping, dragging meat along the ground.] Voice #1: Don’t move. Don’t— [Screech of tearing. Camera drops. Horizontal angle: hooves passing by.] Voice #2 (distant): HELP! Promptober Day 25: Cryptid

Second cryptid for me this month. Went for another inspired by Canada. Meet the Red Antlered Stag...

THE RED ANTLERED STAG DESCRIPTION In Northern Canada, a dying ranger, their eyes clawed out, was found screaming about “the crown in the trees.” This is where the legend of The Red Antlered Stag started. It is said that it is taller than any horse, its limbs too long, joints bending both forward and back as it stalks the tree line. Its antlers are grotesquely oversized, like a forest of bone flowing from its skull, each tine barbed and hooked. They drip constantly with thick, wet strings of blood and shredded organs, as though the creature has recently torn itself through a living body… Its hide hangs loose in places, and where the fur splits you see only hollow cavities and bones. Pale eyes gleam like smoked glass, devoid of thought. When it exhales, despite the hollow cavity of its chest and the absence of lungs or flesh, a chill fog still pours from its jaws, coiling around its hooves even on nights far too warm for mist. The Red Antlered Stag can be found in old woods near forgotten graves, slaughter grounds, and hunting cabins left to rot. It never comes to places where the living gather, only where they once did. BEHAVIORThe stag is said to hunt in silence first. Birds stop singing. Insects vanish. Even wind refuses to rustle the leaves. Then comes the smell of overturned soil and decomposition. If it is spotted, it will freeze, but only to wait for you to remember that prey must run. Once the chase begins, anything slower dies. WEAKNESS Legends disagree on how to destroy the creature. Some swear that only silver can bring it down, while others insist on fire hot enough to burn bone to ash. Yet most accounts end the same way: no one ever confirms what works twice.

Promptober Day 24: Colossal Beast

How to make fighting a colossal beast exciting? Read my two cents on the topic below!

HOW TO FIGHT A COLOSSAL BEAST GUIDELINES FOR DEALING WITH SOMETHING FAR TO BIG TO FIGHT DIRECTLY When designing an encounter with a truly massive creature, you might consider treating it less like a traditional enemy and more like a highly dangerous environment. The creature itself is the battleground. Instead of worrying about its hit points, you could divide the encounter into three to five Zones: body regions, or living hazards that characters must overcome or survive. Each Zone might impose a distinct threat such as a colossal limb smashing the earth, rivers of burning bile, or unstable structures formed from the monster’s hide for example. Alongside that danger, each Zone could conceal opportunities such as vulnerable organs, embedded weapons left from past battles, or natural formations the heroes might turn to their advantage. Progress might be calculated through Objectives rather than damage output. These could take the form of clocks that fill when characters accomplish meaningful actions: disabling a sensory organ, severing a tendril, forcing the beast into retreat, or simply completing an evacuation before it arrives. Attacking directly may contribute but clever tactics, environmental leverage, or specialized equipment might offer better results. To keep tension rising, make the beast’s movement reshape the battlefield. Instead of selecting targets like a normal combatant, its actions might alter Zones: a crashing tail cuts off a route, or shifting posture exposes a new weakness while sealing off another. Characters might find the ground buckling beneath them, their footing suddenly precarious, or new hazards emerging as the creature adapts. Characters’ goals might also broaden beyond the instinct to kill. In some scenarios, slaying such a titan wouldn’t even be possible or wise. Victory could mean survival, forcing a retreat, or stealing a tissue sample. Sometimes the best win condition is simply living long enough to tell the tale.

Roll a d10: 1. Breach in the Hull: Sharp composite plating sheared open like foil. Radiation levels spike nearby. 2. Power Core Leak: A cracked sphere venting blue vapor. Prolonged exposure causes nausea and vertigo. 3. Emergency Drone: A small, insectoid drone scans the area, prioritizing containment. It identifies you as a contamination risk. 4. Unfamiliar Alloy: A dense, magnetically charged material embedded in rock. Tools heat up when used on it. 5. Pilot Remains: Desiccated, non-human body secured in an impact harness. Internal anatomy partially mechanical. 6. Data Node: A cube covered in unknown symbols. Touch activates a holographic display that burns out local electronics. 7. Biological Containment Pod: Broken seal, interior slick with organic residue. Something escaped recently. 8. Gravity Distortion Field: Nearby debris drifts a few centimeters off the ground. Motion sensors malfunction within range. 9. Black Box Beacon: Transmits a distress call in multiple bands, including one human emergency frequency. 10. Recovery Team: Unmarked figures in sealed suits already at work when you arrive. They demand you leave, or help them—under their terms.

SUMMONING CIRCLE GONE WRONG Something went wrong when drawing your summoning circle... Roll 1d10 to see who (or what) answered your call: The Archivist of AshesA cloud of grey ash, shaped like a scholar. The Archivist is omniscient and propose to answer a single question... but at a cost. The Incomplete Angel: Parts of its body are missing — replaced by trembling shapes of pure light. The sight is both beautiful and deeply wrong. It asks for your help to make itself whole again. Sun Fragment: A fist-sized orb of burning light that follows you. The Old Familiar: A creature that calls you by name and remembers yours childhood, yet you never seen it before. Yourself: A flawless copy of you insisting you are the imitation. It seeks to destroy you. Not out of hate, but to be singular once more. The Forbidden God: Slightly taller than you. Very polite, it thanks you for summoning it and offers a boon in exchange of its freedom and to never be mentioned again. The Thousand-Eyed Child: A mass of floating eyes vaguely shaped like a small humanoid, Sees through you and instantly know everything about you. The Infinite Maw: An orb of mouth eating everything in its path. The Empty Crown: A crown manifests in midair. Whispering voices urge you to wear it. If you do, something ancient and powerful tries to share your body. The Sandman: A pale figure with no mouth that hums lullabies into your mind. It brings dreams of what could have been, and asks you make one of them real. The Candle Wolf: A spectral wolf with candles growing from its spine. Its flame flickers with the life force of nearby mortals. If it goes out, something dies. If it burns too bright, something is born.

Promptober Day 21: Sword in the Forest

Okay, I strayed a bit from the theme... without really straying. I was always fascinated by Living Wood as a material in TTRPGs so I had to make something out of it.

Today, I present you the Verdant Blade, a powerful living wood sword!

THE VERDANT BLADE DESCRIPTION The Verdant Blade is a living weapon — its edge grown from root and marrow, its hilt bound in soft moss that never dries. The blade gleams like polished wood filled with green veins of light, and when drawn, it exhales the scent of wet leaves after rain. It hums faintly in daylight, like a distant song carried through trees. When left too long in shadow, it grows dull and heavy, as though yearning for the sun. ABILITIES Regrowth: If the sword is damaged or broken, plant it upright in fertile soil and leave it in sunlight. By the next dawn, it regrows whole. Living Bond: The sword remembers touch. The longer it travels with a bearer, the more attuned it becomes: warm to their hand, pulsing faintly with their heartbeat. In time, small vines creep along the wielder’s wrist, linking skin to hilt. Natural Resonance: when drawn near living things, the Verdant Blade responds. Once per day, it may do one of the following: Cause roots to grow to bind a foe's legs. Cause nearby plants to communicate. Cleanse rot, venom, or disease from a living thing. Calm an animal’s fear with a gentle green glow. Sunbound: the sword weakens in places untouched by sunlight. Its weight doubles, and its edge turns brittle until it is returned to open air. THE VERDANT BLADE'S BLOOM When the sword has drunk both sunlight and blood enough to awaken, vines and flowers grows along the flat of the blade, releasing drifting motes of pollen. While blooming: It deals full damage as steel, even to ethereal or unarmored beings. Each wound it inflicts causes roots to grow from the injury, restraining foes. The wielder can command the sword to extend or retract by will alone. After blooming, it falls dormant for seven days.
