Promptober Day 16: Hauntings

A quick Haunted Objects Table to catch up Day 16!

Enjoy!

#promptober
HAUNTED OBJECT TABLE

Roll a d10:

1. A fogged, cracked mirror. It reflects people that died nearby instead of the viewer.
2. A musical box that plays out of sync. The tune slows when danger approaches.
3. A child's wooden toy, worn smooth from overuse. Move on its own when left alone.
4. A pocket watch, still moving even though unwound. Moves back when a lie is told.
5. A stained, lace wedding veil. See the spirit of the groom when wearing it.
6. A lantern with a dim flame. Burns bright near grave but never casts shadows.
7. A book of pressed flowers, brittle and blackened. When opened, flowers flies.
8. A key that fits no door. Turning it the air offers a glimpse to the room it belonged.
9. A portrait whose eyes seem freshly painted. Sometimes the figure is smiling.
10éA ring that vibrates softly against living skin. Allows hand to touch spirits.

When a player investigates, touches, or uses the object:

Roll a d6:

1–3: Harmless omen or eerie vision.
4–5: Emotional or supernatural consequence.
6: The haunting grows aware of them.
Promptober Day 15: Free Space

I know, I know i'm one day late, but it's all because of @raznag.bsky.social who challenged me to do something inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller for Day 15...

So here's a mini-game using Vincent Price's "Thriller Rap" where you are trapped in a Dance of the Dead.
THE THRILLER
A Campy Horror Mini-Game for 4 to 6 players

Darkness fall across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand, creatures claw in
search of blood, to terrorize your neighbourhood...

You’re survivors caught in a hellish party you wish you weren't invited to, a midnight dance where the music never ends, and neither do the dancers.

To live till dawn, you must dance, scream, and keep the rhythm alive.

SETUP

A d10
Spooky disco, pop, or funk music (or Thriller on repeat!)
One player is chosen as The DJ of the Dead, the Master of Ceremony and narrator.
Each player chooses a horror movie archetype: Prom Queen, DJ, Jock, Cop...
Each begins with 3 Soul Points, your ability to keep moving, breathing, and grooving.

THE BEAT

At the start of the round, the DJ of the Dead recites two lines of The Thriller Rap.
Then, each player in turn rolls a d10:
07–10: You survive. Narrate or act how you dodge, dance, or scare off the dead.
04–06: You falter. The dead take notice. Lose 1 Soul Point.
01–03: You freeze in terror. Describe or act the scene. Lose 1 Soul Point.

If you roll the same number as another player this round, you must perform a synchronized move together or both lose 1 Soul Point as the rhythm breaks.

If you roll a 10, you must dance your life off to the beat. If you do, regain 1 Soul Point.

If everybody fails (01-03) in a single round, it's now Midnight and every roll of 01 to 05 now costs 2 Soul Point.

ENDGAME

The game ends when:
Only one living player remains (the Last Mortal Standing)
Or the final verse of The Thriller Rap is spoken aloud.
That survivor sees dawn, haunted forever by the night that just ended... THE THRILLER RAP
Expanded version. Originally narrated by Vincent Price.

Darkness fall across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize your neighbourhood

And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpses shell

The demons squeal in sheer delight
It's you they spy, so plump, so right
For although the groove is hard to beat
It's still you stand with frozen feet

You try to run, you try to scream
But no more sun you'll ever see
For evil reached from the crypt
To crush you in it's icy grip

The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzy ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom

And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of The Thriller.
I've been playing with the idea of making a Darkwing Duck tabletop roleplaying fan game but given the fact that the IP is out of reach, I might expand on the idea and make a Duckverse TTRPG instead.

Promptober Day 14: Stars

First thing that came to mind was a set of weird constellations that does not behave like normal stars, each with their own cryptic omen. Add them in your favorite setting and watch your players go banana trying to interpret their omens!
FRAGMENT OF EX ASTRONOMICON CINERIS E VITRI

Recovered fragments from a forbidden celestial codex. Its pages chart constellations no longer acknowledged by any sane astronomer.

Each bears an omen written in a dead tongue, whose meaning only grows more obscure the closer one comes to understanding it.

Roll d10 to see what the fragment contains:

1. The Inverted Crown: a ring of stars hung upside down."When light kneels before shadow, the throne shall remember its weight."
2. The Drowned Lantern: a cluster of stars that flickers as if beneath water."The sea forgets nothing, not even the fires it swallowed."
3. The Unblinking Eye: a single star that never moves."All things watched long enough become their watcher."
4. The Shepherd’s Hook: a curved line of stars pointing north."What strays too far will call your name when it returns."
5. The Spiral Maiden: a swirling cluster of stars that never repeats itself."Love circles until only reflection remains."
6. The Hollow Gate: two lines of stars forming a doorway."Knock, and the silence will answer with your own voice."
7. The Tethered Beast: a jagged chain of stars."Chains remember the pain of what they once restrained."
8. The Singing Chain: a chain of ten stars that flickers at different intervals."Those who sings the pattern will not notice when they stop."
9. The Mirror Bowl: a crescent of stars with one single star in the middle."Drink deep because what you swallow will learn your shape."
10. The Empty Shepherd: thirteen stars. Every year a random star is missing."Every absence tends its flock."
Promptober Day 13: Abandoned Locations

This Mini-Dungeon can be played by itself or be the beginning of something bigger. You decide!
MINI-DUNGEON: THE MINE

A four-room crawl through an abandoned mine that should’ve stayed sealed.

ROOM 1 - THE COLLAPSED ENTRANCE

A tangle of rusted beams and crushed carts seals the way out. The air is thick with dust and regret. Someone scratched “STAY QUIET” into the wall near a dead lantern.

Note: Fresh air drifts from somewhere deeper.

ROOM 2 - THE BREAK ROOM

Benches overturned, metal lunch pails left mid-meal, a cracked radio faintly hissing under the static: “Don’t dig deeper.”

Hazard: Every loud noise dislodges more debris from above or wakes something sleeping in the tunnels.
Note: The miners’ lockers each contain a personal relic: a photo, a charm, or a note begging for forgiveness.

ROOM 3 - THE BORE TUNNEL

The tunnel widens into an unnatural chamber: walls slick with a black, glassy mineral. Tools left behind are warped, their handles softened like wax.

Hazard: Anyone who touches the stone hears whispering in their own voice, repeating what they said earlier.
Note: A survey map pinned to a beam marks “THE FIND”, a red circle around this very spot.

ROOM 4 - THE DEEP SHAFT

A vertical drop into darkness, supported by ancient timber and frayed rope. The ladder goes down farther than your light can reach.

The End of The Beginning?: A heartbeat echoes from below. It’s slow, enormous, and rhythmic, like the earth itself is breathing. If players go down, they’ll find what the miners uncovered… but it won’t let them back up.
Is it your birthday today Morgan?
You tagged the wrong company...

Promptober Day 12: Liminal Space

Not being familiar with the genre, I tried my best but have to admit it was challenging for me. So here's for you, a Mini-Module Pitch for The Nowhere Terminal. Now with props (Yeah I got carried away a bit!)

#promptober
MINI-MODULE PITCH: THE NOWHERE TERMINAL
A LIMINAL HORROR ONE-SHOT FOR 2 TO 4 PLAYERS

SETTING
An endless, vintage looking bus terminal, with flickering lights and hazy atmosphere that exists between worlds. Part dream, part purgatory, part limbo. The clocks are frozen, the vending machines hum softly, and every door leads to another waiting room. Buses arrive, but depart when players are not looking or never do.

HOOK
The players awaken in the terminal with no memory of how they arrived. A handful of other passengers wait silently (and those who talks are very forgetful), clutching strange tickets stamped with unfamiliar destinations. Something is wrong with the light as it hums louder when anyone speaks of leaving.

Exploration unfolds in looping corridors, flickering platforms, and forgotten restrooms.

Each “area” contains an encounter that always feels a little off:
A janitor sweeping endlessly in a loop.
An announcement repeating a name no one recognizes or one of the player.
A vending machine that dispenses:
A steaming paper cup of coffee that never cools, never empties.
A folded newspaper dated tomorrow, the headlines half-erased.
A small paperback whose text rearranges itself between reads.

Players will have to make great sacrifices to get out of Nowhere Terminal.

THE TICKET SYSTEM
Each player starts with a bus ticket. Once per session, a player may punch their ticket to change the narrative: reveal a clue, alter time, or pull something impossible into being. Each punch, however, weakens the terminal’s reality. Lights falter, echoes stretch, and shadows start moving on their own. Every time a player uses their ticket, reality collapses a bit more. The station forgets it was ever real. Faces blur, announcements turn to static, and the liminal horror intensifies.

No one can tell if the next bus leads home… or somewhere far worse.
In a few hours, I'm meeting with a fellow @ccuttrpg.ca member to discuss potential partnership for Legends of Rock. I'm hyped and I can't wait!
I came here to say the exact same thing :)
Imagine your favorite action flick. Now imagine it's set in the Time of Pharaohs... This is how you get Nefertiti Overdrive!
The latest adventure for Nefertiti Overdrive is available: "In A Sea of Dunes."

Veterans returning from war learn that the local magistrates have turned against their former leader--The Captain--who has become a bandit.

Who to trust? The answer isn't hard, but setting things right might be.

Promptober Day 11: Thalassophobia

It’s eerie. It’s mysterious. And it’s yours for the taking.
Enjoy!

CREEPY SEA ENCOUNTER: "THE SIREN'S LANTERN"

THE HOOK
At night, the crew spots a faint blue lantern bobbing on the horizon. The light doesn't seem to be moving, even though, the waves are restless. Through a spyglass, there is mist so thick that it is impossible to say where the light comes from.... Faint music can be heard from the distance. Like an eerie funeral hymn.

THE LINE
In the morning, the mist disappears and the crew can see that the light is coming from a lantern hooked to a mast breaking the surface. Old sea wolves identifies the remains of The Siren's Mercy, a ship that sank fifty years ago while carrying an artifact known as The Heart of Tides: a crystalline organ said to beat like a heart, that control ocean currents. The shipwreck is standing upright underwater as though it never sank.
The spirit of its captain can be seen walking the bridge underwater. He believes anyone who approaches is part of his lost crew returning to finish the voyage.

THE SINKER
The captain welcomes the crew back if they go underwater to explore, and begs them to finish “the voyage that never ended.”
If the Heart is taken from the ship, the ocean shifts: currents reverse, storms form from clear skies, and waves becomes even more restless. Crew members will also start hearing "the sea calling their names."
If the Heart is destroyed (this should be hard, it is an artifact after all), a blue lantern begins following the party’s vessel, flickering just beyond reach, night after night.
I LOVE October! The trees are beautiful, there's Halloween (the time of the year where stores have the BEST decoration item), and #promptober.

This year, I'm having such a great time with the event that I will create something really cool by the end of the month...

Promptober Day 10 - Moon

How about a random table about weird, magic-influencing, lunar events? Roll, choose, or incorporate them in your favorite setting and voilà! Instant chaos!
RANDOM TABLE: WEIRD, MAGIC INFLUENCING, LUNAR EVENTS

ROLL D10 OR CHOOSE ONE

Every healing spell causes pain equal to the life it restores.
All casters see their own duplicate in moonlight and sometimes, it casts faster.
Spoken spells fail; only gestures or written runes work tonight.
Illusions becomes sentient and start whispering to their creators.
Any summoning spell calls something extra: small, curious, and hungry.
All transformation spells invert their effect.
Emotions surge uncontrollably; all charm or fear effects double in potency.
Moonlight solidifies into droplets that power any spell but drain years of life.
Spells still cast, but their effects manifest one night later.
Magic briefly dies; when it returns, one random spell has evolved in some ways.

GM HOOKS

The moon’s cycle could replace normal magic limits.
A coven or order might time rituals to these phenomena.
A lunar calendar found in a ruin could predict incoming lunar events

NOTE

You can skip the die roll or the choose one part and use these effect to fit certain moon phases in your setting of choice!
Looking good! Love the color scheme!
Just sayin' 😉
