Starting in the 1830s, and really building up steam before and after the Civil War, through the Gilded Age: American progressivism, with significant leadership by immigrants, Blacks and women, built the foundations of the New Deal, largely through *industrial* unions, starting with the IWW.

This is not the first time I've seen people (progressives) interpret the word "we" (ungrammatically) as exclusionary.
This is the root of the present crisis: definition of self as in opposition to a collective identity, that is enabling the emergence of an American class society.
