Yoi have no idea how pleased I am to have come across this! Will be reading to cite in my dissertation!

Checking the editions, "kuhul" is on p. 8 the 1610 Artis auriferae and not on p. 8 of any of the others! The 1572 and 1593 editions were super unlikely (Newton has yet to ref. them), and Theatrum chemicum's p. 8 doesn't work. All this made possible by lack of re-issues and line-by-line reprints!

A source Newton likes a lot is Turba philosophorum. It's in the front of the 3 Artis auriferae editions (1572, 1593, and 1610) and vol. 5 of the Theatrum chemicum (1660). To figure out the source, I checked "ex lapide Kuhul p 8" because that work isn't super common in Newton's corpus #BookHistory

In Babson 416, the MS I'm working on right now, Newton is weirdly cagey. He puts page numbers down, but does not say to what work he's referring. So you have to sort of guess around his normal sources to see what would fit. For ex., this section has a lot of citations to the front of a source

I made her plain Basque cheesecake in the loaf pan in the last year or so. I don’t like cheesecake really, but that was flipping good!!

my mental image is you hoisting it on a litter with a canopy through Oxford like a medieval noble 😂

European ovens are not built for American Thanksgiving!! We still have two full double ovens at my parents and I’ve told my mom she’s not allowed to switch out the ovens if she renovates

At a later date, I somehow managed to shove four chickens in to roast in the tiny chaplaincy oven…I hadn’t been able to cook for 4-5 months (no dorm stove/oven), so I choose to believe I concentrated months of cooking abilities into one meal. Our chaplain said I could come by to cook anytime 😂

We also made people say what they were thankful for to their table neighbors. Somewhat unexpectedly, they thought we were playing a prank on them and that this wasn’t a real thing we do! And then we watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. A fun thanksgiving all around, but the KFC always gets me

When I lived in London, the USians of the Catholic grad student group wanted to do Thanksgiving to share the experience with everybody. The chaplaincy oven died 2 days before. Instead, we ordered KFC, I scoured every supermarket’s “American section” for cranberry sauce, and someone baked pies

I have so many dearly despised scribes 😂 I think my favorite handwriting is not from a scribe, but from a priest. A priest who wrote the most meticulous inventory of his books (title, author, and full imprint!!!) in immaculate handwriting. And I know it's his hand bc the succeeding doc says so!

4/4, On the paleography front, my 2-year old notes to myself about this witness testimony were: "I hate this scribe. Leaving for future Alex to suffer."
Thankfully, I have had much more paleography practice in the last 2 years, so it was not my favorite, but not ultimate archival suffering!!

I think they genuinely wanted someone to teach literacy. All witnesses say they read the bequeathing clause founding the endowment, and they all sign, so I think they're literate & find value in it. But they're definitely using some good religious rhetoric to convince the bishop! #BookHistory (3/4)

besides also not learning good morals and Christian doctrine. Witnesses repeat the need for reading, writing, math, and Christian doctrine, but they also point out that they're right across the border from French Protestants! Eek! It works on the bishop, & the money is set aside for a teacher (2/4)
