Better Atlanta Transit
@betteratltransit.bsky.social
We’re transit advocates, planners, businesses and community activists who support equitable and sustainable mobility.
We inform and organize Atlantans and our leaders to create a world-class mobility system.
Despite the unforeseen issues that arose during construction, this rubber tire #transit project will likely come in at 1/4 the cost of a tram. Best of all, it connects to— but doesn’t disrupt— the Atlanta Beltline.

It’s almost #election time! So, what are candidates for #Atlanta council thinking about #transportation? We asked, and most answered. Read our blog to see what their priorities are: betteratlantatransit.org/blog

Nearly all of the #bike parking at Atlanta’s Ponce City Market is full.
Typical weekend, right?
It’s Tuesday.
The #micromobility revolution is real.

One of our founding members, Walter Brown, has some interesting thoughts on the search for a new leader at MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority). See below or click this link👇

All of us here at Better Atlanta Transit wish #Atlanta Councilman Jason Dozier and his daughter a speedy recovery. We strongly agree with his statement linked below.

We have no comment on this article about the ill-fated Eastside #Atlanta Beltline streetcar, because the project died some time ago.
It’s considered improper to speak ill of the dead.
July 19, 2025 at 1:13 PM
Reminder: while some #Atlanta accounts post pictures of streetcars in France that show tracks without fences, this is what a streetcar on the Atlanta Beltline would actually look like. This is Charlotte’s rather subdued rail-trail. The fence is there b/c it’s required in the US.
No thank you.

Left: problem.
Right: solution (smaller than a golf cart and allowed on Dutch bike lanes and paths).
#Atlanta doesn’t need a $2 billion umbrella.

Expressways that are no longer expressways:
1. Catherijnebaan, now Catherijnesingel, in Utrecht was once 10 lanes wide, including service roads.
2. Voie Georges Pompidou, now a multiuser path, carried 43,000 cars per day after its Left Bank counterpart was pedestrianized in 2013.

What might a “wheels & heels” redesign of the #Atlanta Beltline look like? Just south of Ponce City Market is an example: 2 parallel paths— & nowhere near enough space for a double-line streetcar— cross North Ave.
One path would need to be wheels-only, but you get the idea.
Let’s give people space.

It looks like someone at @atlantabeltline.bsky.social didn’t get the memo. See the images below. 🤨

The #science is clear: the public views #ebikes as a legitimate #transportation mode that is competitive with BOTH #cars AND local #transit.
This has major implications for spending priorities.

We can fix the Eastside Atlanta Beltline.
The Monon Trail in Carmel, Indiana shows us how.
April 12, 2025 at 2:12 PM
#Indianapolis has a #BRT system that’s been up and running for several years.
Is it being used? Yes, even at an off hour, multiple people boarded and disembarked from this station.
Does it generate #realestate redevelopment? Not really. This corridor remains pretty much as it was pre-construction.

Ridership is so low that more people are using #Lime scooters, but #OklahomaCity has a streetcar. Was it responsible for development in downtown’s Bricktown neighborhood or does credit go to the short blocks and level terrain that make it so walkable?
April 7, 2025 at 8:10 PM
Some in #Atlanta argue that a streetcar is more permanent than a Bus Rapid Transit line.
Spot the problem with the streetcar line pictured below. It was built 20 years ago in Little Rock.
Nothing is permanent, especially if nobody uses it.
April 5, 2025 at 2:59 PM
Given the recent shift in #Atlanta streetcar plans, it’s worth looking at what other #cities are doing.
This is #LittleRock, #Arkansas, where a 3+ mile vintage streetcar system was built in during the mode’s brief renaissance 20 years ago.
It’s not ADA accessible, nor is it particularly functional.

#Atlanta Beltline streetcar supporters are pushing #Charlotte as an example of how vibrant the corridor will be if they get their way. The pictures below are all from the Charlotte Rail Trail, a multiuser path that runs alongside their light rail line.

Does this look “vibrant” to you?

No thanks.

🙄 Another day, another inaccurate piece from Beltline streetcar supporters.
Alycen Whiddon, not Ryan Gravel, came up with the original plan for what is now the Beltline. It was for the parks & paths that are there today, not transit.
👨🏽‍🏫 Grade the time-around-loop argument as a D-. See us after class❌

Can Atlanta Beltline streetcar supporters not find anyone who is ACTUALLY ON the Beltline that supports their billion-dollar trolley?

Save the Beltline.

Here’s why a streetcar won’t be used by workers to reach the businesses on the @atlantabeltline.bsky.social:
1. It’s a LONG trip. Get on a Peachtree Center, you go by Centennial Park.
2. No dedicated lanes before the Beltline, so it’ll be SLOW.
3. An inch of snow shuts it down.
Those are the facts.

The importance of investing in active transportation in Atlanta cannot be overstated.

🚞 Here’s a rail transit project that the Atlanta metro area should copy:
This is a regional rail (commuter rail, if you’re old-school) system that goes from the San Francisco Bay area to Sonoma wine country 🌁
Note: for <$100 million they’ll get MILES of track 🤯
