The tide level at Port aux Basques this morning is currently being measured at 2.329m. The highest astronomical tide level is 2.1m There are likely areas of the southwest coast seeing minor to moderate flooding. Levels peak with the high tide (between now and 9 AM) and then should recede. #nlwx

Remembering the wreck of the USS Pollux and Truxtun, U.S. naval vessels from WW2 that were wrecked off Newfoundland in 1942. The people of St. Lawrence risked their lives to rescue survivors. 186 sailors survived; 203 sailors lost their lives. I visited the memorial at Chamber Cove this past summer.

Sharing this story I wrote a few years ago about Newfoundland WW1 history: John Bernard Croak, born in Little Bay, N.L., was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his acts of valour, which took place 2 months before the battle for which Tommy Ricketts earned his VC.
