Bavaria was a constitutional monarchy with two seperated treasuries. The royal family lived on a budget, granted by the state. Ludwig overspent this budget. The state of Bavaria refused to put more money than the usual budget from the state treasury into the royal treasury.

It's still unclear if his death was by his own hands, an accident or murder. He was deeply religious and gay - and in this light, his state of mind would probably considered to be a severe depression by modern standards.

It's not set in any specific year, only vaguely in the future. Nobody knows if Von Harbou and Lang intended this to be 1990, 2020 or the year 3000.

Only a later english translation of the novel and the Moroder Cut said something about 2026.

Nein, der Film spielt nicht im Jahr 2026. Die Behauptung kam erst Jahrzehnte später im anglo-amerikanischen Raum auf. Weder der Roman, noch der Stummfilm nennen eine Jahreszahl und beziehen sich lediglich auf eine nicht näher verortete Zukunft.
