Was just an author on a medical journal article where they list your qualifications with your name for the first time, and it is funny seeing my MA next to a heap of PhDs and MPHs.

I do enjoy being a cultural studies guy who has somehow ended up doing quite senior public health policy work.

been a rough fuckin year, guys!! I am doing remarkably well all things considered but holy shit am I limping towards the finish line

The best thing I've played this year by a mile didn't come out this year: Pentiment

Fuckin stunning, up there with Disco Elysium as some of the best writing in video games. Amazing characters, so well paced, yet it still feels very much like a Video Game in how you interact with it
Don't think I've had a really stand-out favourite game this year, but a bunch of big titles I haven't played yet (Silksong, DK Banana, Pokemon Z-A)

Actually that's not even true, two of my favourite games of this year (Blue Prince and Clair Obscur) are both kind of a mess, very high highs and very low lows
Prompted by the sequel coming out I just finished Death Stranding, which I'd never played. It's been said but, what a fuckin weird game! Can't remember the last game I played where the gap between the bits I loved and the bits I hated was so large.

“That means courts will treat these children like adults” is a sentence the premier actually used. Proposing life sentences for 14-16 year olds is evil. Meanwhile the federal government is banning kids the same age from social media. Too young to post online but not to serve life in prison.
These reforms violate human rights obligations, contradict the evidence and will be devastating for children and young people in conflict with the law.
Victoria’s ‘adult time for violent crime’ reforms will not solve the youth crime problem

People were very hostile towards Halloween in Australia when I was growing up, but walking home near midnight and seeing the streets filled with young people having fun is so heartening, especially in a city like Sydney that can be so hostile to most expressions of public life

Been thinking about my linguistics degree and while I always loved the discipline, on reflection I think the stuff I found politically engaging (discourse analysis) didn't align with what I enjoyed intellectually (cognitive linguistics, e.g. first language acquisition, cognitive semantics).

When I was a linguistics undergrad and honours student Barb was an academic mentor to me, as I know she was to many, the first person to get me excited about scholarly research. What a cool thing from Lauren and everyone involved. Can't wait to read these papers.

Dealing with AI slop in the workplace sucks in part because it puts you in the position of basically having to ask someone to their face if they're lying: "this is unreadable nonsense, did you actually write it?"
