Het hele idee van een senaat (met door de Koning benoemde leden) kwam van Belgische zijde bij de totstandbrenging van de grondwet voor het verenigde koninkrijk. De grondwet van 1814 kende geen tweekamerstelsel.
De Belgische Senaat vergadert over de eigen afschaffing. Afscheid van de Senaat in Brussel is ook voor Nederland een historisch moment. ‘Onze’ Eerste Kamer - ten tijde van het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden - vergaderde regelmatig in deze zaal.
