Anecdotal.
Different observation: for awhile, I had the whiff that right-wing tech-aligned conspiracy theory was that Al would rise up and kill us all, and now those exact same people are not just promoting Al but, like, disturbingly revelatory about it *** Just an n=1 anecdote, my wife's sister-in-law is a fully Q-anon-pilled evangelical, and she is rapturous about Al now, and constantly posts gAl images and videos on Facebook. I don't get it. Is it escapism?

The commentariat wanted Trump's win in 2024 to be the eternal MAGA crushing of woke because the commentariat despises woke. The median voter meanwhile was thinking something along the lines of: Trump rich, he make me rich. Both groups are astoundingly stupid, but one group is much more actively and consciously evil.

It's obnoxious that Noonan insists on a MAGA-coded democracy/republic distinction—chiding silly Dems because electoral tallies are (mostly, presumably) accurate—and then defines republicanism as ... democracy.
Quickly, obviously, broadly: A republic is a form of government in which power begins on the ground, with the people, and shoots (and is mediated) upward. Power doesn't come from the top down. The people choose representatives who are protective of local interests while keeping their eye on the nation's. The government of which they're part is bound by laws, by a Constitution that is not only a document of enumerated laws but a mean, lean machine for preserving liberty.

Bob Murrell (for whom I voted in the primary) has endorsed Aimee McCarron. This follows another endorsement text I received earlier this week from JP Morrell.

I found myself at several candidate forums saying agree with Aimee" on a number of topics. What I admire about Aimee McCarron is her ability to bring people together even when we don't agree on every issue to focus on what truly matters: getting this city back on track. She's a proven budget problem solver and exactly who we need on the City Council right now. Im asking my supporters and everyone in District A to vote for Aimee McCarron.

City Council, District A Holly Friedman led the crowded District A race with 8,589 votes (38.7%), followed by Aimee McCarron with 7,170 (32.3%) and Bob Murrell with 3,002 (13.5%). Because no candidate received a majority, Friedman and McCarron advance to a runoff set for Nov. 15.

2024 election results for the county where this farmer resides in NE Arkansas. It went 81% for Trump. Incidentally, Census data on Wikipedia for 2020 indicates the county is 89% white.

Important clarification from Murc in the comments.
Quoting the previous commentator: "Imight or might not count as ultraleft on your scale, but that's been my position for decades and it's part of why get so annoyed when Murc's law is used as a cipher 'none of this is the Democrats' fault.' Because you know what, they had a major hand in it." Murc: I also got annoyed at it, and made the damn thing up. Murc's Law is for things like "why didn't Hillary stop Trump? That makes Trump her fault!" It is not for things like "Trump was allowed to walk free under an open sky after 1/6."

The biggest piece of the pie for enforcement operations in the United States will go to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest, detain, and deport immigrants. Congress gave ICE $75 billion over four years, approximately $18.7 billion each year. Added to the $10 billion Congress already appropriated ICE for fiscal year 2025 in March, ICE now has $28.7 billion at its disposal this year. That $28.7 billion figure is nearly triple ICE's entire budget for FY24.

Lmao the SCOTUS Six aren't even pretending to do law anymore.
Skeets from law prof Marty Lederman Six Justices shockingly conclude that it's likely the Impoundment Control precludes an otherwise valid APA claim to require expenditure of obligated funds. This argument, which turns the ICA on its head, is so absurd that the Trump DOJ itself wisely disclaimed it a month ago. Utterly lawless. After Judges Henderson and Katsas invoked it without being prompted to do so in the court of appeals, they quickly thereafter amended their opinion to delete the argument after both sides agreed it was incorrect. Yet now it's the basis for the SCOTUS' decision to grant emergency relief. sigh

I'll add New Orleans, which is somehow both a hollowed out shell out its former self and punching well above its weight in relevance That's exactly why didn't add it. honestly don't know if it's losing more relevance or gaining more. I guess it equals out. New Orleans has so many problems, and I'm biased as a French-speaking American history nerd who loves to eat and drink to excess. But it's probably THE most unique American major city. People who haven't also been to Europe (France in my case, but with months in Germany too) think it feels so European because it's obviously different from what they know. No, not at all. The food, the music, and the people are different from everywhere else - including Acadiana to the west, where I've spent more time personally. New Orleans is that old whore who is willing to spread her legs one more time.

I have very bad news about our elites.
We are where Hungarians were in 2010, where Russians were in 2000, and where Germans were in 1933. Those places' futures were not inevitable; had elites and even ordinary people made different choices, catastrophes could have been avoided.
