Congrats to Ian Hall, winner of the 2025 Princemere Prize, and to runners-up Carlos Gómez and Lisa Mullenneaux. Honored to celebrate H. L. Delaney’s “The Ballad of Charlie Fiester,” a finalist alongside Bauld, Buchinger, Davis, DeVilbiss, Faulkner, Haltmaier, Kulseth, Samore, Sinha, and Sweeney.

In 1872, 50 to 60 Modoc warriors held off a larger force of U.S. Army soldiers for half a year amid volcanic walls, boulders, and holes in northern California. Archaeologists have recently returned to the stronghold.
