#ITeachPhysics Day 82
Even numbered AP completed the coffee filter lab. Still run into the same issues of other things around getting picked up. I forgot that 50% skipped the pre req physics and hadn't learned how to use motion detectors which slowed us down. 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 74
AP Physics returned to their before break partner challenge. Unlike other years, few were successful in solving it originally, not recognjzing the similarities to the optional HW assigned...
Physics began studying forces on incline planes, notes mixed with some activities.🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 72
Physics did some demos about static equilibrium and learned how to calculate the force in two strings holding up a sign at an angle.
AP Physics even blocks completed the same conversation of momentum lab. While the set up can be temperamental, it is so satisfying when it works. 🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 71
AP Physics used Pasco launchers to create 2D collisions. We move all the tables together to form "Pangea" so they are shooting away from other groups. Lots of adjustments so it takes awhile but usually the data is pretty good. I yell "Continental Drift!" when its time to clean up.🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 70
Physics started 2D forces with pulleys. We start with force diagrams then switch to an activity. Two similar blocks connected by a string over a pulley will move until they add more mass to the one on the table. They try to find just the amount, to hold them then find static mu.🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 70
AP learned about ballistic pendulums, working through a sample problem I got from @the-physics-well.net so I can show his Flir video of it afterwards. I also demo it by shooting a ping pong ball then use the launcher with the plastic and metal spheres. Then they do it. 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 61
AP learned about Kepler's Laws and derived the third one. They worry about it not being on the equation sheet until we derive it for a circle.
Physics did a max force lab, making use of string that I was gifted that falls apart very easily. Continuing to reinforce Fnet vs others.🎢🧪

I may have purchased 9 small foam pumpkins on sale ... I may make this theoretical problem into a lab practical. 🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 53 cont.
Physics did a balanced forces lab based on @kellyoshea.bsky.social. They start off calling every force a force of gravity but end up with good results. All you need are the push pull scales, balances that can read in Newtons and some mystery masses. 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 43 cont
Physics continued exploring Newton's Laws without calling them that with the blocks & bands activities. They have similar blocks, some with hooks and some without that they attach to rubber band chains. Lots of prescribed experiments but they also do their own. 🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 42 cont
Physics did exploratory activities about Newton's Laws, we just didn't call it that. Each group got one regular and one lead filled tennis ball. Then they used a rubber mallet to tap a bowling ball around a track they made. Pure chaos in the best ways. 🎢🧪

Vital piece of physics equipment for AP Physics to learn about forms on an object in UCM on a banked turn. 🎢🧪

Excited to see my @ncnaapt.bsky.social friends in about a month! 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 36:
AP students continued learning about UCM with banked turns and Ferris wheels. This little ferris wheel bear attached to one of my bike wheels makes a great visual as we talk about the directions of acceleration, nor.al force and their magnitude. 🎢🧪

When I set it up again this morning the scales weren't quite as nice as last week. Individually they read about 3.5 N, when hung by only one scale its <7N. But students definitely got the idea when seeing the two set-ups. Easy to make, but of course I'd prefer Dan Burns' full size version. 🧪🎢

Forgot to share the Bear Bosun Chair I made last week. I had rushed something last year and always meant to redo it. When AP C students did the '86 FRQ about it, I made this. Simple wood frame as the bear "seat," rubber bands to hold it, eye hooks and wire at the top, binder clip at hands. 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 31 cont:
New lab for me in Physics, students measured their vertical jump height by leaving tape on our exterior wall. They compared to where they can reach while grounded. They had a lot of fun. More practice problems about largest jump heights for different actions and creatures. 🎢🧪

@rogerfreedman.bsky.social your epic online posts made it to our Physics Club flyers.

#Teach180 Day 15:
AP Physics worked through a review slide deck in partners for forces covering everything from units to vector addition to FBD, conceptual scenarios, etc. Great discussions if they engage with it. It includes this inertial reference frame question i mocked up: 🧪🎢

Even with fresh batteries this one wont work ... I think its time it goes to the toy car junk yard. 🧪🎢
August 16, 2025 at 1:12 PM
Tried something new this year, since I wanted them to only have one car at a time but they were going to race them later, they needed to know which was which. One person from their group signed the back of the car. That will work until I come up with cute license plate stickers. 🎢🧪

Day 2 cont:
I think we could do this with carbon paper and a marble that would produce small marks. Dropping the markers leaves a big splotch which just adds to error. But I do like the visual of combining all their data on one big target. 🧪🎢

Very glad to get out and get some vitamin D on a walk with Bryn and see some sites at #aaptsm25 today

Another workshop by David Rakestraw and Dan Burns @the-physics-well.net for the @aapthq.bsky.social summer meeting in D.C. on Sunday afternoon.
