Cursed by Angelique to only walk the night. My heart shall always belong to my darling, Josette. 🖤

@darkshadowssoc.bsky.social -- Dark Shadows roleplay
The shutters of the window flew open. Although there had been no storm a moment ago, the wind worked its way through the room as though a gale was blowing in from the sea. Most of the candles in the room went out, leaving only the sound of the chandelier crystals tinkling in the sudden darkness.

He tore his eyes from the portrait, turning to Vicki to address her question. Jasmine... But then David was already in the room and speaking to him. The boy was speaking strangely, so strangely. For no reason he could understand, Barnabas wanted to run from the room like a frightened child.

What if she appeared to warn Vicki and David of his secret? He had gained much control over his curse and would never put his family in danger now, but did Josette realize that? Yet an even greater fear...she would not appear...that she still shunned him. Would he would never obtain forgiveness?

As they went, Barnabas lit the sconces; the light forcing the gloom to retreat ever so slightly. Then they reached the room -- HER room. He gently turned the latch. Only a couple of paces into the room Barnabas halted, leaving in shadow the face of the portrait that hung over the fireplace.

He had, after all, promised David. "I suppose we should make our way to her room, then." Barnabas took a candelabra and led the way upstairs. Most of the candles in the house had not yet been lit and the twilight had darkened into night, leaving the hallways of the Old House shrouded in shadows.

He listened with rapt attention to hear of his beloved Josette. His descendants had a relationship with her he'd likely never had...not even in life. Barnabas tarried with the drinks as long as he could, a strange reluctance stalling him. But he sensed the boy's patience was reaching its end.

His own circumstances echoed Laura's, and he knew how she felt. Barnabas laid a gentle hand upon the tea tin, over her fingers. "And she knows that I trust you." He felt assured that he had been right to do so now.

Barnabas paused, watching her knuckles whiten as they pressed against the tin. Laura had always been so composed before. "I understand the dangers of a secret. If it's any conciliation, Julia only knows that we know each other from the past."

Barnabas took a step towards the kitchen, then looked back to the boy. "Do you...still see her here, David?" It had been so long since he had caught even a inkling of Josette's presence.

"But I am a man who relishes the past and my family's history."

He turned to David and replied, "I believe I can manage that." He had never gotten used to the newfangled drinks, nor did he have any use for them, of course. Fortunately, he thought Julia kept some orange juice in the icebox.

"Oh, believe me, it is no trouble." Even after everything, Barnabas still had a soft spot for the young woman -- more so than he'd like to admit. The corners of his mouth curled slightly into a smile at her words. "I see what you mean, Victoria." More clearly than she did, no doubt.

The woman had been obviously worried about Roger, but upon his question, she turned a shade whiter and turned away from him. "I'm sorry. I thought we were letting go of our pretensions," Barnabas said with a slight lift of his eyebrows as he filled the kettle from a pitcher of water.

Laura had been silent since they left the others and seemed to grow even more uncomfortable. "Have things changed so little that you still know where to find the tea after all this time?" Barnabas took a strange pride in keeping the Old House the same as it was. It honored his family somehow.

She had been a mistress of this house once, overseeing the servants and meal preparations. Her hair and dress styled in such a modern way made him forget that. He wondered how old @lauracollinsds.bsky.social truly was.

Turning to David he almost smiled. There was something amusing about the boy's question. Barnabas replied as truthfully as possible. "Yes, I suppose I did. My father told many stories about the infamous Barnabas Collins. But where are my manners? May I get either of you some refreshments?"

Barnabas had often wondered how Victoria possessed so much patience with the boy and her empathy shone even in the darkest shadows. He felt a twinge of guilt lying to her. "Yes, much better now. Please don't concern yourself. I'm sure you have enough grief. I know how special an uncle can be."

He moved away, placing a hand upon the mantelpiece. "I am sorry I was not at the funeral. A dear friend fell ill. I tended to them and this prevented me." His family life, so long ago! But it felt as recent as Roger's death. "I could use some company this evening. Please make yourself at home."

A terrible taskmaster whom he could never make happy. How many times he had wished his own father gone—a depraved wish! Yet...perhaps he and David had shared this wish when they were both young. Young and foolish. Barnabas understood that now. "Then it is home for both of us, David."

"It is alright, Victoria," he tried to assure her. Willie must have something to do with the boy having such easy access to the house. They would have a talk later. Roger had been this boy's father, and for his sake Barnabas would try to show some patience. Barnabas thought of his own father—

Take heart, my dear. My sister always sang when she felt nervous. I myself have been known to retreat out of the house and into the woods with paper and pen or a good book. That was long ago, when my family still walked the halls of this house... Now there is quiet, but still no peace.

"My dear child, to be absent from such a profound family gathering has hurt me more than you will ever know." To be unable to say a final goodbye to his dear friend! And to make matters worse the vampire could not even give a truthful reason for his absence during the day.
