I say 'perhaps', because I don't want to presume on the writer (Sharon Begley)'s point. That might be a clumsy mis-reading. It's a really interesting piece and worth reading.

About Chaplin? That does sound familiar. Hard to factor out what you might already know from outside the book.

Only tangentially connected, but He, by John Connolly is a great novel based on Stan Laurel's life. In which the writer has affection for his subject, but doesn't hide his flaws.
