🧪This is a lovely piece of writing, that says so much about Watson - but also (perhaps) about the hero-focussed view of scientific advancement in general. Maybe if Watson wasn't so obsessed with being seen as a genius, he would have been happier.

🧪looking back at a century of physics papers in the Irish Leaving Cert (end of High School), we have this from 1925... I had to look up what an Atwood's machine was, and Fletcher's Trolley.....

There's a Pat Ingoldsby book launch tomorrow night in @chaptersbookstore.bsky.social . It is for the collection that Vivienne Baillie crowd funded. I'm just looking forward to being in a room full of people who loved him and his work again . Tickets on eventbrite.

JD Vance claims that diversity weakens unions, as people end up distrusting each other and not organizing.

Let me tell you two menswear stories related to this claim. 🧵

Hurrican Melissa had a central pressure of 892 millibars (about 88% of sea level) when it made landfall, which is incredible; the lower the pressure the stronger the air is drawn in and the stronger the winds.

So much power.

A guy walked up to me yesterday and asked where I’m from. I said, “Just over the road”. He gave me a thumbs up and left. I guess I had the “right” answer—and “right” accent. This is just the world now? Solidarity with those who have to deal with what comes when you don’t have the “right” answer

Sunday and other stupid statements from this week
All examples welcome. A potential candidate for the Presidency who could not get sufficient nominations writes: A significant spoiled vote would embarrass the Government internationally This, I think, is what Fintan O’Toole understood when he called for a conservative candidate to be nominated, so that, win or lose, conservative voters would consent to the outcome. Democracy requires “buy-in” by the people, and at present many feel “locked out” by the establishment.
