Usually for service to service communication you would use OIDC service accounts, but they come with pre shared secrets again and then both services must share the same IDP, which might be another issue depending on your use case.

The last protocol that I designed uses JWTs. Each instance handles their own Crypto Keys and only shares the Public Key with other instances for verification of tokens. Although that still boils down to the same "problem" that you need to store a private key. mTLS provides another layer there.

I can second that. Not the super polished, feature rich environment with all the integrations you might be used to, but it works very decently and there is not a multi billion dollar company behind it.
