What an absolutely spiritually crushing read. I'm glad i pushed through, it feels like a necessary corrective to the desperate optimism about China of Adam Tooze that I've recently grabbed on to, but its just grim to stay abreast of the world and see so harshly the tracks of blood-soaked titans
i've reached the chapter on the one child policy in Breakneck, and i think that anyone who ever thought china was going to transition to democracy was deluded purely on the grounds of what people would do to anyone who got near to that policys enactment if it got looked over with any transparency

every now and then i think about how cool it would be to send some videogame into the past and see what impact it would have, the branching strange alternate lineage of games cribbing off something decades ahead of them that would ensue

I worry that making anything with LLMs is kind of a local optimum trap. It's an astonishing first jump when you start something, but you're just climbing the smaller hill. And because of diminishing returns, you eventually end up circling at the top taking two steps forward two steps back.
My adventures in vibe coding continued: Generative AI is a deeply expensive edging machine, but for your life.

now seeing a rise in US healthcare company names in the spam folder. i guess it's no longer a mystery. despair and gambling, the two eternal monoliths of scams.

It's interesting actually encountering what a discipline being "insular" means practically. I'm keeping an eye on PhD positions being posted at the moment, and a lot of the social sciences will consider you if you have social science credits, but business & economics only accept "their own"

I was present for the birth of the web, the explosion of personal sites, and the blogging revolution, and you know what we never had to do? Beg people to use our shit.

Inching ever closer to being an information pollution crank. Just need to come up with something as gripping as Silent Spring
LLMs are spam generators. That is all.

They're designed to generate plausibly human-like text well enough to pass a generic Turing Test. That's why people believe they're "intelligent".

But really, all they are is spam generators.

We have hit the spamularity.

Solidarity with Jerome Powell requires solidarity with Sepp Blatter. American meddling with and pressure on independent institutions has a history far deeper than trump, and we need to fight its every stage. How do you think the world cup came to the US in the first place?
Since last night, 16,800 fans have cancelled their FIFA World Cup 2026 tickets.

In addition FIFA has scheduled an emergency meeting next week to address the escalating protesting and how it relates to safety and political concerns.

The trains in the corner of germany where i grew up have decayed from bad so you complain about them like the weather to completely untenable
It used to be that the app made the delays navigable but theyve completely lost the ability to predict even their own delays affecting each other
