President Donald Trump has announced a historic deal with Saudi Arabia under which the U.S. will receive $600 billion to strengthen industries including AI, energy, defense and technology. Under the new $600 billion investment plan, $20 billion will be earmarked for AI data centers and energy infrastructure in the U.S. Omdia senior research director Ed Wilford told AI Business that the $20 billion investment in AI is an important step for Saudi Arabia, which has long sought to be a main regional tech hub and wanted an economic base apart from petroleum. Google, DataVolt, Oracle, Salesforce, AMD and Uber have also pledged $80 billion for “transformative technologies” in both countries. The deal is also intended to solidify relations between the two nations, and build economic ties that will “endure for generations to come,” according to a White House press release. That influx in foreign investment could lay the groundwork for new AI research hubs and attract more tech talent in the U.S. “I’d imagine it will make the region particularly attractive for AI engineers and startups from countries such as India and China — a base like KSA could be seen as more neutral, and investments harder to unwind,” Wilford said. However, there are concerns around foreign influence in AI-related sectors, especially when it involves sensitive areas like defense or critical infrastructure. e risk in replacing a rules-based like the AI Diffusion policy, with a more transactional approach” Wilford said. “Witnessing how tariffs have whipsawed over the last six weeks will make all the parties to this wary and want to make the deal as concrete as possible, as soon as possible.”
