Mid-morning thoughts: three big issues underlying the safety of our country are election integrity, gerrymandering, and Citizens United. We must ensure our elections aren't tampered with, in districts drawn without bias, and where the wealthy cannot buy loudspeakers and call it "free speech."
December 5, 2025 at 3:03 PM
Late night thoughts: to be effective citizens of this country, we must work to be informed about current issues, and be ready to have our preconceptions challenged, and our thinking changed. Engaging in honest discussion with other people helps in this process. But we really *need* to be educated.

Early morning thoughts: expecting to make a complete shift in a single election cycle to a progressive political outcome (e.g. Medicare for All) is unrealistic. That doesn't make it not worth fighting for. It just means it will take time and sustained effort and NOT STOPPING (or giving up).

And this is why the Humanities and Fine Arts are vital to maintain and to nurture. Also something that AI will never, ever even come close to.
Great culture can save lives. Literally.

Midnight thoughts: Dept. of Homeland Security, War on Terror (Mission Accomplished?), Authorizations for Use of Military Force, Guantanamo Bay, Extraordinary Rendition, waterboarding, enhanced interrogation techniques, drone strikes on civilians. Now ICE is a secret police in the U.S. Figure it out.

Just imagining how much better it would be if ALL news stories about vaccine-preventable illnesses were illustrated with pictures of people with the disease, not pictures of needle injections. If you must show something that people will find scary & unpleasant, make it the disease, not the cure.
I'm so tired of measles.

I'm also tired of people using needle shots on stories like this.

Show what measles looks like.

Late night thoughts: (1) Trump is abusing the presidency for his personal monetary gain, (2) the incompetence of Trump's appointees is mind-boggling, (3) the GOP is complicit in ALL of this, (4) I haven't even gotten to the Epstein class buying the country out from under us, and then charge us rent.

Mid-morning thoughts: I've said this before - in 2016, Trump executed a hostile take-over of the GOP. In 2024, Trump executed a hostile take-over of the Federal government. To regain control of the government, we must oust Trump and his GOP cronies (Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger notwithstanding.)

World AIDS Day: Honour the Past, Power the Future.
On #WorldAIDSDay, we wear the red ribbon to remember tens of thousands of lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses in the UK, and to honour LGBT+ activists who built a response powered by community, love & courage. [1/7]

Early morning thoughts: Steve Wittkoff isn't representing the U.S. government, he's representing the Trump Organization. This isn't about ending the war in Ukraine, it's about getting the best deal for oligarchs - Putin, Trump, others - and we're paying the price. (Citizens United makes it worse.)

Trump, long an enthusiastic advocate of extrajudicial killings and war crimes, "has been lusting for this kind of violence for years, maybe decades. And he has made no secret of it. This is what he wanted, and this is what he is doing right now. Expect much more." [@sykescharlie.bsky.social]

🧵A legal scholar finds the killing by special forces of survivors in the Navy attack on an alleged drug boat to be a war crime and murder.

Dimon on why JPMorgan Chase is not funding WH Ballroom:
We have an issue, which is anything we do, since we do a lot of contracts with governments here and around the world, we have to be very careful how anything is perceived, and also how the next DOJ is going to deal with it.

Noontime thoughts: if you are concerned that the Democratic party "isn't doing enough," but you object to progressive activists pushing Democratic values and "dragging the party to the left" you just might have some cognitive dissonance going on. If we want to win, we have to speak to shared values.

In April 2025 the killer was granted permanent asylum by the Trump regime.

Late night thoughts: saying "all politicians are liars," or "all of them are corrupt," is another way of losing faith in the political process. We can't afford that, not if we want to keep the republic. But we must hold politicians accountable, through our own participation in voting and governing.
