I've talked about this when it comes to SSI fraud. I'd rather 1000 people fraudulently get benefits than 1 person be denied; others would prefer 1000 eligible people get denied rather than 1 person commit fraud (note: SSI fraud is EXTREMELY rare).
I would rather have a world where we all trust each other and accept that a few people will take advantage of it than a world where folks have to perform disability constantly in order to get the help they need. Let kids have an extra 30 minutes on the test, jesus fucking christ

SSA disability is appalling. I’m an attorney at a nonprofit and I’ve been representing ppl in disability benefits appeals for 20 years and I am still brought to rage tears about what my clients must endure to get wholly inadequate monthly benefits and how hard we have to fight to get them

Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

We need to be able to see that the line "accommodations have gone too far" is an expression of the ableist notion that disabled students do not belong in higher ed. Its fundamentally an anxiety about the fact that disabled students get an "advantage" over abled students.

I'm stressed, I'm not eating, and my friends memorial is looming on Friday.
Any help will be a breath of fresh air.
