Gratitude transforms us.
In life and in program evaluation. When we acknowledge contributors, highlight strengths, center participation, and treat communities as true experts, evaluation becomes more meaningful.
Small acts of gratitude can shift the whole culture.

You can’t understand a person or community without its history.
And you can’t evaluate a program honestly if you ignore the story that shaped the need.
Ask the basics:
“What did you try before?”
“Why did it stop?”
Communities remember. Their history is data.

Sometimes you have to show up in person.
I once walked into a partnership meeting expecting 60+ people.
Three showed up.
Turns out, one represented a full coalition behind the scenes.
A reminder: every site has its own logic.
Arrive with understanding.

Traveling to four cities for a chronic disease prevention initiative taught me this:
Context isn’t background—it’s the story.
Local leaders, politics, community history… each shaped the work differently.
How do you explore context in your work?

A friend called to say she took my advice—years ago, I told her to collect evaluation data.
Today, that data helped her organization win funding.
Lesson learned: evaluation works, and our words have power—more than we realize.

📚 Joyce Carol Oates reminds us: creativity, reflection & meaning matter as much as outcomes.

In evaluation, we often ask, “Are we doing things right?”
But we should also ask: “Are we cultivating meaning, culture & connection?”

Being a solutionary doesn’t require perfection—just curiosity.
Ask simple questions:
👉 Are we doing the right things?
👉 Are we doing things right?
That’s how communities keep learning, growing, and caring forward.

Investing in ourselves isn’t a retreat from community work—it’s a return to it with more power.

In a world saturated with exhausting headlines, constant crises, and burnout culture, rest can feel indulgent. Well-being isn’t a side effect of justice. It’s part of the strategy.

"You become a physician to treat thousands. A researcher to save billions." — Ian Morgan.
I’d add: Evaluators help communities improve the systems that shape them. Let’s use every tool we have

It’s not just the right thing to do — it’s smart.
When everyone’s included, we can fix more, build more, and dream bigger.✨
