Because of apparent level of coordination involved, it's important to dig into the details on this one. I'm digesting it in stages.
During the Sept. 30 raid, residents, migrants, including the woman’s husband, and squatters alike were zip-tied in the middle of the night. Other residents — like the man who helped his neighbors hide — were left undisturbed by ICE agents, prompting questions about what federal authorities knew about the building’s occupants ahead of time and how they obtained that information. Remnants of the raid and interviews with residents who lived through it reveal some hints, including a mysterious map of the building found in the complex and makeshift door stickers that took inventory of occupants in some units.

Real quick: this is solid logic for like, raising children or not perpetuating marginalizations like racism, misogyny etc.

What it is absolutely the fuck NOT for, is asking less of Electeds when a coalition of solidarity could be useful if not vital in slowing down fascism.
Can we please normalize praise for Democratic leadership NOT being zero-sum? You can praise JB Pritzker and leave it at that, without taking a swipe at another Democratic leader to balance things out. Just say “Great job, gov, thank you!” and leave it.

Prior to discovering OMIK, it had never even occured to me that I might run into a civilian net control operator that would simply refuse me access on account of Blackness. I was so focused on learning procedure I needed a reminder that what remains of these networks must be fortified or rebuilt.

A Net Control Station (NCS) is an operator responsible for controlling all radio traffic on the repeater during a directed net. The NCS should view themselves as an emergency dispatcher. The NCS needs to remain professional at all times and needs to maintain a calm collected demeanor. NCS Standard Operating Guidelines 1. While serving as the net control station, you maintain total responsibility and authority in providing a smooth running net. The NCS, however, must accept any direction, guidance, or changes given by the GC-ARPSC Lead Operators. 2. Remember that you are in charge. Do not allow any arguments or unregulated operating to take place. Often, in emergencies, nerves become frayed and tempers can get short. Operate as a peacemaker and calm people down. Remember that your tone of voice is the most powerful part of your speech. 3. Give the time frequently. 4. When transmitting, be sure to "hang back" after the courtesy tone, in order to give stations a chance to break in. During emergency nets things can happen quickly. So be prepared to handle yourself in a controlled manor.

My strongest suggestion is that we use the current convenient means to build durable networks to each other that we can transfer from Blacksky between meatspace and the airwaves as needed or desired.
Black CBers were already experimenting with the radios as a form of organizing- although in ways that weren't exactly government sanctioned. According to Blake, Black CB users were active as early as 1959 with the founding of the Rooster Channel Jumpers, a network of Black CB users across the US. The club had chapters in major cities in the north, south, and east, and "a formal governance structure at every level, and blue and gold uniforms for its members." In 1978, about 10,000 Rooster Channel Jumpers met in Dallas for the club's annual convention, where the keynote speaker urged Black CBers to "join together in a national black radio operators organization to promote the use of CB channels specifically for black economic organizing and mutual benefit."

In addition to publications like The Green Book, OMIK did what we always do, found a way to create safety when surrounded by hostility, and the need for that grows by the hour, even if it's only to be aware of how *others* are moving around you.
Our Story The OMIK Amateur Radio Association, Inc. was founded on August 17, 1952, as the OMIK Electronic Communications Association by Black amateur radio operators from the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky to deal with discrimination in the dominant culture and to assist Black travelers with information on places where they could safely eat and lodge. Many ham organizations denied membership to Blacks. Therefore, black amateur radio operators needed a Black Amateur Radio organization with its own nets and other activities. Llewellyn Scearce, W8TKE, of Detroit, Michigan, inspired the hams that he knew to take steps to form a regional association of black hams within the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky. Lawrence D. Sallee, W8ZAW, promoted a meeting of eleven hams in the on-campus home of Henry Garcia, an instructor at Wilberforce College, now Central State University, near Dayton, Ohio. Thus the first meeting of this association was held. Lawrence Sallee, W8ZAW, became the first president; James A. Smith, W8CZD, the first secretary/treasurer; and Llewellyn Searce, W8TKE, the first net control coordinator. Many names were suggested to call the new organization, including Ohio Valley Radio Association, Amateur Radio for Defense, and United Radio Association. After much debate, they were all discarded, and the first letter of each participating state was used to form a name sounding much like the electrical unit of resistance-ohm. OMIK (pronounced "O-Mike") Electronic Communications Association was born. Later incorporated in Michigan, the organization sustained this name until it was proposed and changed to OMIK Amateur Radio Association, Inc. in 2001.

Between people who are never clocking in again because of Covid, Dobbs, and the targeted demolition of Medicaid, anyone with a uterus is in for a bumpy ride.

"It's surprising how similar we are to parts of rural sub-Saharan Africa, especially as you consider the distances people have to go to get to hospitals and facilities now." When you add these factors together, you see the United States is at a crossroads. With millions losing their own source of insurance, we will see a domino effect across maternity care, losing more of an already dwindling number of obstetric providers as well as the hospital L&D department that employ them, especially in rural and medically underserved areas. How do we respond? Unless these forces are countered in some positive manner, more closures will happen, maternal complications and mortality will increase, and we, as a nation and society, will see untold losses in our families and communities.
