Watterson elevated comics as an art form and protected what he made. I’m really glad there’s not a movie out with Calvin bringing in cash from his Calvinball Roblox game and a Chris Pratt voiced Hobbes ordering tuna on DoorDash
I sometimes think about how amazing it must have felt, being Bill Watterson, and saying no to every request and proposal to expand the Calvin & Hobbes IP to tv, movies, merch, you-name-it. To be in that position, in need of nothing more, and to just say no thanks.

Batman has the best rogues gallery in comics because those supervillain concepts and designs are so strong, not because they necessarily have a ton of great stories to show for it. The Penguin should be a model for how to make these characters sing going forward.
