💥💥 Double detonation!

For the first time, astronomers have obtained visual evidence that a star met its end by detonating twice.

The fingerprint that points to this mechanism is represented by two separate shells of calcium.

For the first time, our Solar Orbiter mission has captured close-up images of the Sun’s mysterious poles, regions long hidden from our view.

For those of us who made the poor choice to have our life’s work governed by orbital mechanics, 4 years can change a project from “some really interesting science to do towards the end of my career”into “won’t happen in my lifetime”

(Looking at you Uranus orbiter)
I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

Pretty big coronal mass ejection from the Sun hit us last night. The results are beautiful.
This morning we drove to Bozeman Pride for @zoandbehold.bsky.social to speak, then went down to Yellowstone and saw incredible sights.

Then, on the drive back to Missoula at 1AM, the heavens erupted.

Naked eye visible aurora. The northern lights told us Happy Pride :)

Rubin captured over 500 exposures per night across 3 nights this week, using its automated observation scheduler — that’s 20x more than during the 7 week period with the engineering camera last year!🔭 🧪

An obit for Alicia Soderberg, a lovely person who will be much missed. I met Alicia when she was an undergrad student in my summer REU research progam; she later became a valued teacher in the same program, mentoring many students who themselves went on to success.
Laura Chomiuk, Raffaella Margutti, Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, and Nathan Sanders are strong mentors to me, and as I read their description of Alicia, I see how much of her shines through them. It's an honor to get to know her through their eyes. I encourage all to read.

What's the magical green glow that dominates the sky in this pic of ESO’s La Silla Observatory? 🧐

Known as airglow, it's a faint light emitted by the Earth’s atmosphere and it is only visible in the darkest of places.

What causes it? Find out here: www.eso.org/public/image...

Today we got word that the federal government is laying off the entire group. 🔭🧪
