There's a small region in the back of the eye loaded with cone cells, which do colour and sharp vision but not in low light. Makes a blind spot. In contrast the rod cells out round the rest of the back of the eye are very sensitive to small brightness variations (and movement). Eyes are nifty

In 1983, when ACM was first held, the concept of interstellar objects was still a beautifully theoretical exercise. (There's a Beatrice Tinsley paper, because of course there is). Now we have three known, and extensive steps towards a population model that involves the whole Galaxy.

The G4 geomagnetic storm is having an effect on the New Zealand power grid. Transpower have issued a Grid Emergency Notice and have taken lines and transformers in Southland out of service.

The frustrating thing is that the 'aliens!' disinformation makes it hard to have this normal scientific discussion about what is interestingly different. Actively suppresses the process of science - and makes things a lot less fun...
