like as a victim myself i hate so deeply when people call every single scene featuring rape/csa as "gratuitous" or "shock value" by virtue of it existing within the work. I think non-victims should be 1000% allowed to explore this type of subject matter to understand it better for themselves.

most of the time when an author includes a certain taboo subject in their work, regardless of the nature of it, it serves a narrative or thematic purpose that the audience gets to dissect and analyze. part of that analysis can be if the author handled the subject matter well or not.
