Had the immense pleasure of seeing The Pansy Craze last weekend.

@masonalexanderpark.bsky.social's review of recent queer history was smart & funny, with Sasha Velour as a great guest. Mason had performed as Hedwig and gave some deeply moving (and thematically so on point) songs from the show 🥲

Book 36: The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. @meakoopa.bsky.social gifted me this classic of Canadian high school curricula & I really enjoyed it!

A fascinating urtext for the X-Men (incl flipflopping on mutant/ human relations) and sense8. It also uses the term "spider-man" 7 years before P Parker 🕷️

Book 35: You Weren't Meant to Be Human by @ajwhiteauthor.bsky.social.

I keep thinking about one particular moment that, at first, reads as hopeful and upbeat, but that actually reframes the story with an additional profound horror.

Just such a great story, great characters, recommended for sure.

Incredibly good advice from someone who used to rate AI results. Definitely going to use this.

Currently cooking on Oscaround, our little Oscars-tracking website: Oscar contenders!

We've pulled together some lists of films guesses so we can beta test new features like the upcoming Oscars pools (track movies and predictions with your friends!).

Coming soon!

Really enjoy the National Ballet of Canada's production of The Winter's Tale. Great score and incredible performances.

I'm always surprised how much I enjoy and am engaged by ballet—we're already planning to go back for The Nutcracker.

Just realized we never updated Oscaround, our Oscars tracking website, with last year's winners 🤦😅

That's now updated, thanks to the shiny new superuser "Set as Winner" buttons!

Having a great rainy afternoon digging back into our Oscars website and building for fun again ✨

Got to see Lucile Hadzihalilovic's Innocence at @tiffnet.bsky.social tonight—a strange, beautiful, haunting movie about a girls' boarding school where new students arrive to the walled-off campus in coffins. I'll be thinking about this movie for a while.

Book 34: Hello Sunshine by @keezyyoung.bsky.social. A fantastic, rewarding graphic novel with the space to tell its rich story fully. A+, easily one of my new favourites.

All of that and *also* a powerful and moving sharing of a schizoaffective character's experience. Can't recommend this enough.

Had the great pleasure of seeing @edgarwright.bsky.social's The Running Man tonight at @tiffnet.bsky.social! A sharp, funny, and beautifully realized dystopia with so many delightful beats. Great director Q&A afterwards too 👏

Just returned my newly past job's work laptop! Treating myself to a coffee and cookie and read in a cafe I've never been to 💖
November 3, 2025 at 9:22 PM
Last week just disappeared into Halloween, eh?

Finally back at the laptop. Today's goal: get the Oscar pool invite infrastructure built out. 🧑‍💻

✅ forgot to follow up on this one—got the predictions moved into their own database table and all the dependencies updated.

Next week will be a sprint to build Oscar pools!

I picked up an [😬😅] number of books at the @thebookpeople.ca event tonight, including the first in @marthawells.com's so-highly-recommended Murderbot series and @ajwhiteauthor.bsky.social's amazing-looking new book You Weren't Meant To Be Human. Very excited for the reading ahead!
October 31, 2025 at 2:58 AM
Our local bookstore @thebookpeople.ca threw an amazing social event tonight! I walked in right as @meakoopa.bsky.social was reading from Dayspring and even gave an impromptu reading myself from a book I loved -- so great to be in community, so glad for a space like them 💖

Awesome! I donated $100 for now -- happy to match more if I have some capacity after a day or two.
October 31, 2025 at 2:35 AM
Awesome! Just matched that, and am also submitting it to my work to get an additional match 🙂

Book 33: Monstress by Marjorie Liu and @sanatakeda.bsky.social. Epic in every sense.

Rereading the first six volumes and catching up on the rest highlighted the incredible scope of the story and world, juxtaposed with Maika's intimate emotional arc. The art is stunning, I lingered on every page. 💯

Book 32: ??!?!? ??!!!???!, the first eight chapters of a friend's novel set in the Viking era. It's really excellent, queer and thoughtful and engaging—can't wait to read the rest of the story and for it to be out in the world someday!
