@melissaschuh.bsky.social I think reading historical fiction, thriller, a tad of horror as well as the whodunnit genre 😊

I’m not in the UK, but please gift this to someone. (Hope this is how it works)

#WritersCoffeeClub 21 Jan: When writing about unpleasant feelings, how do you avoid alienating the readers entirely?

I wrap it in such tension and suspense that the reader feels compelled/eager/thirsty to bite through it anyway. Not for the faint of heart 😅

"If I’ve done my work well, the reader should be left both hopeful for something positive and stricken with doubts. But that will be up to them to judge."

This beautifully painted mural by Sidney Waerts is the reason I asked him for creating the cover art for #mrsCleyton. Stunningly, he accepted 🤍

#WritersCoffeeClub 20 Jan: Figuratively speaking, do you travel with the caravan or solo over the hills?

Found a sweet caravan with my wife. But whenever I start to get to writing, she kicks me out and I'm on my own 😂

#WordOfTheDay : Petrified

Mostly used to say someone is extremely fearful of something.

“He was petrified that the dog would come after him, opting to give it a wide berth instead.”

#WritingPrompt

Jane was never raised religiously. At age 42 she discovered this was a blessing. It meant that she could read and draw strength from the Bible when she needed it most later in her life.

#WritersCoffeeClub / #WritersTeaClub 19 Jan. Talk about something from your own life which made it onto the page.

When I was a child, we used to have a rabbit that lived in a wooden cage in our garden. One morning I was sleeping late, and a large dog had snuck into the garden.

#WritersCoffeeClub 18 Jan: Are you comfortable making your readers uncomfortable? How far will you go?

As a psychological thriller and horror writer, I’m afraid it’s my duty to be comfortable with that shit 😅

And I will go far. Very far. Otherwise the writing wouldn’t be heartfelt.

#WordOfTheDay : Discombobulation

A state of being confused or uncomfortable with something.

If you felt discombobulated reading #childOfTheMoon , maybe take it easy with #mrsCleyton 😅

#WritersCoffeeClub / #WritersTeaClub 17 Jan: What’s frustrating you, writing-wise?

At the moment, nothing much, but I do still feel the remnants of an existential drain from finishing my last novel. Nothing some coffee/Earl Grey power combo can’t fix though 💪

#WordOfTheDay : Limerence

It’s the butterflies you feel in your tummy when in love. The sea water pouring from your arm pits when you approach the girl of your dreams. The tearing of the heart that you feel when you finally have the balls to ask her out.

#WritersCoffeeClub / #WritersTeaClub 16 Jan: Name a non-anglophone writer who has really lit you up.

Rabbi Zelig Pliskin

Despite not being Jewish, his Gateway to Happiness has been a transformative influence in my life, and I still draw a great amount of positivity from it.

#WordOfTheDay : Cryceratops

A particular kind of dinosaur invented by children to annoy the bloody shite out of their parents by crying in their stead.

If your home is roamed by a cryceratops, you better flee 😂

#WritersCoffeeClub 15 Jan: How human are your protagonists? What about your antagonists?

#mrsCleyton is both the protagonist and antagonist in her own story. She’s as human as it gets.

The roles of her husband and her dogs I’ll leave in the middle, but you can figure out who’s human, I believe 😅

#WordOfTheDay : Bokashi

#Bokashi is the Japanese name for a fermentation process that converts food waste into healthy soil for the garden and liquid that can be used (in diluted form) as a power food for plants.

Recommended for those with children (see link below).

#WritersCoffeeClub 14 Jan: What’s a service or skill you’d like to offer your fellow writers?

I find the research process to be quite fun, so if a writer would like to visit the Netherlands (especially near Amsterdam) I might be able to support them in some ways. I’d like that ☺️
