I feel like the total lack of consequences for anyone in power over the past 25 years sets up that win-win thinking because nobody can imagine a meaningful lose state at this point.

It doesn't help that in the intervening 10 years things have gotten nastier and more pronounced. It becomes near impossible to be charitable when people explicitly (and repeatedly) make it clear that no, they do in fact want this and enjoy it.

Very (very) charitably it's akin to the appeal of humanoid robots and self-driving cars in that it is what people envision as being Better. It is futuristic, it is cool. There's an aesthetic quality that somehow overrides any evidence of inefficiency.
