I have received a lot of questions about why we should even bother discussing these ideas about outer space, when most of these ideas and issues will be so far away and we have so many other issues to deal with here now?
To them I say this:

Gravity terrified people because it wasn’t fantasy, it was physics. A single collision becomes a chain reaction, and suddenly low Earth orbit is a deathtrap. This forces us to ask how we govern an environment where one mistake can cripple every satellite and every nation? #SpaceDebris #AstroPolitics

I have waited oh so long…
In preparation for the #nasa #artemis 2 #mission to the #moon, the #orion crew module was lifted onto the SLS. Read more on our website about the mission including its #launch date and goals.

From Arrival, we learn that communication, not conquest can be the ultimate survival tool. Maybe the best “space defense” policy isn’t a weapon system, but a language. Space law begins where mutual understanding does. #DiplomacyInSpace #SciFiWisdom

We are witnessing and living through the tipping point right now… what will it take to make any actual meaningful changes?
Do we really want to wait until the point of no return (which some argue we are already at/past) before we course adjust?

Apple’s “For All Mankind” shows how altering history alters power. What if the first flag on Mars isn’t a state’s? Private actors already challenge the space commons. Sci-fi here reminds us that whoever gets there first, often writes the rules. #SpaceLaw #IR

WALL-E shows a future where humanity outsources care to machines and abandons stewardship. If space debris grows unchecked, we might get our own orbital junkyard. Sustainability clauses in space treaties are no longer optional. #SpaceDebris #EcoSpaceLaw

District 9 flips the the typical alien encounter colonial lens, Earth becomes the oppressor. A powerful reminder that our first contact protocols must reflect humility, not hierarchy. “Universal jurisdiction” should mean universal respect. #PostcolonialSpace #SciFiFutures

From Gattaca to Altered Carbon, sci-fi warns of genetic and class stratification. As space travel becomes privatized, will access to orbit mirror Earth’s inequalities? The law must democratize, not corporatize, the cosmos. #EquitableSpace #SpacePolicy

Dune isn’t necessarily just a myth, it’s a manual on resource imperialism. The spice can = water, data, or Helium-3. Space law must prevent future “Arrakis” scenarios by embedding equity and benefit sharing into any lunar or asteroid resource regime. #SciFiFutures #SpaceJustice

Ex Machina and AI 2041 warns us that space autonomy will soon mean machine autonomy. How do we regulate AI decision-making in off-world habitats or rovers? The line between “crew” and “tool” will soon be blurring. #SpaceLaw #AIethics

In Interstellar, Earth’s collapse forced migration to the stars. Real-world lesson? Sustainability on Earth determines sustainability beyond it. Space law can’t ignore climate law, they’re two sides of the same coin of planetary stewardship. #AstroPolitics #Sustainability

“The Martian” shows cooperation beats sovereignty. In reality, Mars colonization will undoubtedly strain the Outer Space Treaty’s ban on national appropriation. Can shared survival in fiction inspire real multilateral frameworks for resource-sharing? #SpaceGovernance

Star Trek’s Prime Directive isn’t just fiction, it is a prototype for a non-interference norm. As we eye lunar mining or contact scenarios, should we adopt a “Cosmic Directive” in space law to protect nascent ecosystems, or potential life itself? #SpaceEthics #SciFiFutures

Sci-fi is our policy lab. Before lawyers or diplomats, storytellers mapped the ethics of the stars. #TheExpanse taught us that space politics = resource politics. Can we design treaties that prevent “Belters vs. Earthers” before it begins? #SpaceLaw #AstroPolitics

Democracy and rule of law is more fragile than we think…
Brilliant New York Times Opinion piece on how authoritarianism begins, with interviews from people who have lived through the early and mid stages of it.
