The UK sits on the boundary between Atlantic mild air and Arctic/continental cold air.
When the jet stream is strong and zonal, mild, wet Atlantic air pushes in → milder weather.
When the jet stream weakens, buckles, or shifts south, cold air can drop down from the north or east → cold snaps.

And nicely shows why the UK is getting successions of mild weather, then cold, then mild again over a month...
