I had seen a couple of other productions of Tom Stoppard plays and enjoyed them, but I had no idea what was awaiting me at the National Theatre when I went to see 'Arcadia' in 1993
Felicity K, Bill N, Rufus S, Sam W, Harriet W, all were excellent
Tom was in the house with his pals Mick and Jerry

Cecil Beaton, who had volunteered his photographic services to the Ministry of Information, was put in RAF uniform and sent to photograph the fighting forces all over the world
He could, one suspects, make Field Marshal Montgomery's hair curl with his stories

In the postwar debate about the relaxing of laws against homosexuality, Lord Montgomery of Alamein spoke stridently in the House of Lords saying there was no suspicion of this beastly behaviour occurring in the forces he had commanded
He was baffled at the wave of derisive laughter that greeted him

Harrods Furniture Depository was massively extended between the wars, then, about 20 [?] years ago converted into yes, you guessed it, luxury thameside apartments!
Lovely modern photo stolen from the website of Saville's estate agents

Both these pictures are from Souster's book
I wonder if Hunt employed another draughtsman to draw the fascinating cutaway of the structure, it's obviously drawn by another hand?
Was it ghosted for him by E A Rickards? Something about the lively staffage suggests his work to me

W G Hunt was something of a specialist in depository buildings - there was a vogue for them in the Edwardian era - he also designed the initial block for the Harrods Furniture Depository, 1914, with its distinctive domes, very prominently sited on the river bank at Barnes, opposite the River Café

When I got home and checked, I was mildly astonished to find that Bridget mentioned the Pall Mall Depository in 'BofE London 3 north-west'
It was designed in 1911 by W[illiam] G[eorge] Hunt [1870-1940], a Kensington native, whose office was in Vicarage Gate
Here it is in Souster's book

A few years ago I went for a wander around north Kensington, which is, socially and architecturally, a very different kettle of fish from south Kensington
On my stroll I noticed this large storage structure which was being turned into - what else? - "luxury apartments"

It crops up in Souster's book as it was originally an actual electrical factory, producing magnetos, but it was seized at the outbreak of war in 1914, as the property of an enemy alien
Bosch was an employee of Siemens, who sent him to England. He liked it and stayed on

I used to work near this building on Tottenham Court Road, but never paid much attention to it in those far-off days
It was designed by Hobden & Porri for Bosch and built in stages, beginning at the southern end in 1913. The northern half, next to Heal's, was added by Ernest Souster himself in 1923

Yet another old book arrives at Brady Towers; I had never heard of this one until the other day, but it's right up my street...
Souster [1882-1953] seems not to have produced any other books, nor were there any further volumes in the Broadway Architectural Handbooks series

Oh, one, one, two, three, four
🎶
I've got a sheet for my bed and a pillow for my head
I've got a pencil full of lead and some water for my throat
I've got buttons for my coat and sails on my boat
So much more than I needed before

I got money in the meter and a two bar heater🎵

There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
O blow, my bully boys, blow (Huh!)

Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go

That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth🎶
