Church potluck: person A spends 20 minutes following careful sequence of near ritual status to ensure canned cranberry sauce comes out in the shape of the can. Person B sees it on the table and "helpfully"grabs a fork to mash it up so it will look home made.

We are nearly approaching the 10-year anniversary of the Colangelo family Thanksgiving mystery of trying to figure out who ate the bag of gourmet dog treats thinking they were cookies and stashed the wrapper under the couch once they realized their mistake.

I think we would all be in a much better place if there was widely shared medical consensus on what *actually* causes autism. A friend is due in late December and has a step-brother who is non-verbal autistic. She keeps asking how to ensure her baby won't end up like that and RFK is answering her.

Oh, skip Seager, I'm going to need Kershaw to make one last appearance for the rest of my life.

Stores with fewer that 50 employees and less than 5 locations or who do not meet the complicated definition of "fast food" (lots of coffee shops don't serve food for this reason) are subject only to the standard $16.50 instead.

By this logic, it seems like going to Starbucks - which in California is subject to the $20/hr fast food minimum wage - would be better than the local coffee shop that pays their employees less per hour.

I totally get not going to a union location that's on strike. But there is no picket line at my location, and when I asked, the employees were not interested in forming one. Why should I avoid a place where the workers are not on strike?

When "I won't vote for somebody who doesn't support trans people" is considered a hostage taking purity test

but "I won't vote for somebody who DOES support trans people" is NOT considered a hostage-taking purity test

then we aren't against hostage taking, we're just choosing our preferred hostage

I had a assoc prof who got upset about informal titles with another grad student. She asked if the prof would use her formal title in return. The prof asked what that would be. "As a justice emeritus of the state supreme court, I'm typically addressed as 'Your Honor.'" That ended the conversation.

Slick Willie was the reason I registered and voted Republican my first 3 presidential elections.

This is true. Seattle is one of the only places I've been where I can get a good coffee on my way to the airport for my 6:00am flight. What is it about non-chain coffee shops that don't even open the doors until 8:30?!

The luxury burger place takes 45 minutes, is only open from 10:00 to 2:00 four days a week and I have to find a different one every place I go while traveling. Starbucks and McDonald's are both successful because they are fast, ubiquitous, and open all day.

What local coffee shop needs to permanently steal my business: 1) order ahead app, 2) Open by 5:30am, 3) Happily allow me to use my own cup, 4) Something with protein for breakfast.

During the Biden Admin, the GOP blocked every government reform and repeatedly forced concessions from Democrats in order to keep business as usual. We just want the DEMs to be as effective in the minority as the GOP, but the just keep caving in.

Have you read anything by Becky Chambers? "Long way to a small angry planet" is really good.

It is really hard to be poor. It is also really hard to be not quite poor enough. People who have been neither won't get why.
