Latest example: during my recent visits to Moscow literally _everyone_, including older doctors and Soviet-era writers, is asking me in surprise how I manage to live in Finland where "Russians are persecuted" and "it's dangerous to speak Russian in the streets" (a popular myth in Russian media)...

And I'm now surrounded by these very Soviet-educated people who believe everything they hear on TV or from friends who watch conspirologist channels.

Personally, I can't claim that Soviet education developed critical thinking, outside of perhaps technical disciplines at which it really did excel.

(hell, I'm bloody vulnerable to all of that, although to be fair my reading has been more than limited over my lifetime)

I think this doesn't necessarily work without someone with pre-existing critical thinking skills guiding you towards the right kinds of things to read, as books are unfortunately not safe from Sturgeon's law and deception. Seen many well-read people who believe in conspiracies and propaganda...

Ah I guess the showrunners were referencing the estimation that we'll simply run out of nuclear fuel by the 60-90s
December 12, 2025 at 5:19 PM
The latter to be honest is also a little problematic, as it's unlikely that we can switch to renewables by then and we _need_ nuclear to stay reasonably green (besides there's now apparently a way to turn waste into new fuel...?)

Oh wow they even had a WW3
December 11, 2025 at 8:52 PM
Not to mention that Drill is The Mole, and Rocket is TB3. I mean, it's not like it couldn't all be a coincidence, both are inspired by space launches and heavy duty vehicles, but I'll stick to thinking it's an homage

He's also voiced the Daleks in classic Who and has a role in Peppa Pig, this guy was in all kinds of British family/kids TV for over half a century, wow
December 11, 2025 at 7:45 PM
thunderbird 6 was actually good!

the title only referring to a gag at the end is more than a little anticlimactic, but that aside, a solid sabotage/rescue plot, although, as expected, drawn out from what should've just been a normal length episode

>the dream sequence was only added to feature some 1960s british celebrity the producers were personally fond of

well that sure didn't age well
