Here’s an essay I wrote about trees. It’s also about climate narratives, loss, and Dutch women in early twentieth-century botany. But mostly it’s about 🌳🌳🌳 (and 🪲🪲🪲). With illustrations from @naturalis.bsky.social
What do we tell ourselves when trees simply vanish? We’ve put Ann Marie Wilson’s beautiful essay « Tree illness as metaphor » in front of the paywall for you to find out. Read it here: europeanreviewofbooks.com/tree-illness...

In a first for the Ivy League school, Columbia's new officers have the same powers of warrantless search and arrest as any other police officer under New York law. The state law permits the officers to use "physical force and deadly physical force in making an arrest or preventing an escape."
Columbia University's new campus patrol officers appointed by New York Police Department
The 36 new special patrol officers announced last month by Columbia University were appointed by the New York Police Department and will be subject to the orders of the police commissioner, an arrangement confirmed by a Columbia spokesperson this week.

One of my favourite things in headlines are where you can see the muscle memory of legal training being applied to animals, buildings, train lines.
This headline reads like the BBC is terrified of being sued for libel by the rhino.

I will never tired of photographs of people walking around carrying bird hides on their head. From the book, In de ban van vogels (a history of Dutch ornithology), by Karel Voous.

Me: "Check out these cool sheep I saw on my bike to work today. Do you think they were there seeking warmth? Or maybe because it was dry compared to the grass?"
Wife: "They were probably just charging."

Lock of hair belonging to William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-1751), currently on show at the Mauritshuis as part of their 'Lost Museum' exhibit. Arresting to encounter- it stopped me in my tracks! Though it also looks suspiciously like a cat coughed up a hairball. www.mauritshuis.nl/nu-te-doen/t...
