Thank you! (For evidence it was improvised, see the bit where the melody moves to the left hand, in which I'm playing with one finger while thinking, "Oh crap...why do I do this to myself?")

He knows, and he's usually unflappable, but this is all a bit much.

With a quick sketch, getting the face shape (square? round? pointed?) right is half the battle. The rest is a matter of dots and lines.

I hope this helps a teeny bit.

I apologise if that's not what you want, but your sketch does evoke comics for me. It's worth remembering that in this kind of drawing, simple circles and lines can evoke emotions. Our brains sort of fill in the details. How can a circle and some squiggles be sad? Charlie Brown knows.

I don't know if this is quite what you're looking for, but it strikes me you're aiming for something like comic style. An oldy but a goody is @scottmccloud.bsky.social's Understanding Comics (and other books), which discusses abstract and iconic art. In general, resources on drawing comics may help.

I've been doing webcomics since 2006 and this one, It Never Rains, since 2014. I have pantsed the whole thing. I would not advise anyone to pants a time-travel webcomic. However, I do find it really fun. I should learn to draw backgrounds. itneverrainscomic.com/index.html
